The advancement in technology has led to a corresponding increase in industrial activities across the globe. The United States and China are the leading contributors to industrial pollution. There has been increasing cases of pollution in these countries. Air, water and waste pollution have been attributed to insufficient efforts aimed at reducing the level of pollution. This paper is developed against this backdrop. It assesses the three types of pollution in both the United States and China and compares environmental policies that the governments of these countries use to reduce pollution. In addition, the essay explores the existing differences in dealing with environmental issues and how China can improve on its environmental challenge in relation to the United States.
Organization/Strategy
The essay utilizes a top-down strategy to improve logic and organization of the thesis. This strategy encompasses looking at the bigger picture and breaking it into smaller components for analysis. This essay assumes a strategy that moves from general to specific. In this regard, the environmental issues in these countries are explored from a general standpoint. The global perspective of the environmental challenge is analyzed and how the United States and China fit into this challenge. The essay focuses on issues that are specific to US and China. For example, there may be a global reduction in air pollution (general). This reduction may take place in light of a reduction in air pollution in the United States and an increase in air pollution in China (specific).
Research
The research explores a variety of literature on the subject of pollution across the two countries. This is important in drawing conclusion about the contribution of the two countries in abetting pollution or mitigating the phenomenon. The research incorporates images and tables to reinforce the author’s submission.
Introduction
Pollution has been a major subject of debate in international conferences on sustainable development. While there have been increased global efforts to reduce pollution, focus has turned on measures the United States and China are undertaking to promote this global goal.
Part 1: Air Pollution
Quotation: “Only eight of the seventy four cities in China complied with Ministry of Environmental Protection.”
Analysis: This figure is very low given that China is one of the leading contributors of industrial pollution. Failure by the Ministry of Environment to give penalties on cities that fail to comply with the quality standards is an indication of relaxed environmental quality instruments.
Quotation: “Clean Air Act offers the framework for protection of air quality among the federal, state and local agencies.”
Analysis: Pollution in the USA is regulated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. This agency coordinates efforts aimed at ensuring sustainable production. The federal, state and local agencies work in a collaborative manner.
In the United States: In the U.S., EPA has an office responsible for improving air quality. This office is called Air Quality and Planning Standards. Pollutants that are harmful to people are prevented. In China, contamination of the air has increased the attention of the media. Weaker regulatory agencies are unable to contain the rising cases of air pollution. The presence of stringer regulatory agencies in U.S. differs from weaker regulatory bodies in China. U.S. regulations are effective.
Part 2: Water Pollution
Quotation: “Industrial wastes find their way into streams and water bodies.”
Analysis: Water pollution in China is characterized by industrial wastes that find their way into streams. This means that the lives of people downstream are endangered.
Quotation: “Sustained efforts at reducing water pollution seem to bear fruits.”
Analysis: EPA not only plays a role in reducing air pollution. It also ensures that industries uphold ethical responsibility of maintaining best practices.
In the US, EPA protects the nation’s water resources from pollutants while in China; industrial wastes enter water bodies due to inadequate surveillance. The United States’ regulations are more effective than China’s regulations.
Part 3: Waste Pollution
Quotation: “China risks social conflict due to lagging war on pollution.”
Analysis: The effect of environmental degradation has reached unprecedented levels. Unless China makes efforts to curb waste pollution, the consequences of wanton pollution would be disastrous.
Quotation: “Success in U.S. efforts in reducing waste pollution.”
Analysis: The United States commitment to promote environmental sustainability has met success due to a collaborative framework of stakeholder engagement.
In the United States, EPA has a mandate to enhance best practices among industries and organizations. Waste management programs have been designed to control waste pollution. Whereas efforts have been placed to reduce waste pollution China, there is need to fill implementation gaps. U.S. regulations on waste pollution are effective relative to Chinese.
Conclusion
Examining the environmental practices in United States relative to China, it is deducible that the United States’ policies on the environment are backed by strong implementation machinery compared to China. The Chinese government has a relaxed its policies on environment which makes the concept of environmental conservation disregarded. In this regard, the Chinese government can tighten its policies by creating and giving institutions mandate to prosecute bodies that fail to comply with the quality standards.
