Our lives are unpredictable and we can never know what will happen the next moment. The psychology of human beings is a thing which decides the way of human’s behavior in this or that situation. Whether we act like heroes or hide in the corner depends on the personality type and the knowledge a person possesses about that ways of behavior in that particular emergency case. There are many ways to be aware of the emergency case managing and the government provides the population with the programs which are aimed to help people “to save and sustain lives, minimize suffering, and protect property in a timely and effective manner in communities that become overwhelmed by disasters.” (Homeland Security, 2015).
The article by Bird, Chague-Goff and Gero displays the behavior of different people who were attacked by tsunami. As it was mentioned, all people react differently and after the tsunamis the ways the individuals responded were various. Some people managed to keep themselves strong and even tried to fight and work to find people they loved and to start rebuilding their homes; some people were hardly injured and couldn’t differentiate themselves, they were lost in their grief, refused to talk about it and even felt guilt or staying alive.
According to Bird “it is important to introduce children to disasters (e.g. earthquake, tsunamis, famine, drought, disease) so that they learn how to understand and manage them” (Bird at al., 2011) and that’s why here the problem of information gaining appears. Data collecting is very important in the process of problem solving. According to Wilcox “How data are collected has a sizeable impact on how data are managed, and ultimately how the research is performed” (Wilcox at al., 2012). The data collecting methods may be classified into qualitative and quantitative. The first method is used for deeper predicting of a certain event or situation when the secondary facts are taken into the consideration. I would suggest improving the result of this method, which now is mostly open-ended. I suppose that in order to be prepared perfectly the result should be stated and presented clearly. As for the second group of methods, they are based on information and data statistics which show the prevalence of a certain kind of thinking or phenomenon in the society. The thing which can’t be perfectly achieved here is limitedness and disability to question each participant of the society or country which does not give the whole picture of the situation. This aspect should me mentioned and taken to improvement. The methods of data collection may help people to cope with the disaster results and not to bring big damage to their mental sphere. The data may be collected with the help of different methods such as theoretical studying, observation, experimental activity, projecting, modeling and actual practice. These methods are believed to be the most successful as they help to gain all the information and skills required in the disaster situations from the inner studying of the problem to its actual deciding.
Very often in emergency situations people need a kind of a leader who will run the whole process of disaster and emergency managing. According to Emergency Response Training: the FAST Team and the results got in the course of the experiments the following conclusions may be presented: people manage the disaster and its results better when they work in groups of people with different occupations and knowledge. FAST was created in order to “to get the community more involved in the preparedness activities that we have set up at the health department” (Laureate Education, 2014). There were different groups organized and the results showed that “for FAST mean knowledge scores there was a statistically significant improvement between pre- and post-course scores” (Paddock at al., 2015). We may say that the team with various experiences may overcome the problems easier than, for example, a group of physicians only. This may be explained by the fact that disaster situations require not identical thinking but the various perspectives from which the solution may be viewed and found. Different ways and approaches to problem solving contribute to faster and more successful management. Also, the role of previous education is emphasized and that’s why population must be taught how to act in the case of emergency and how to minimize its damage and negative consequences.
There are many aspects and ways to be prepared to the disasters and such organization as CDC and others help people to be ready and aware of the actions which have to be takes in the case of emergency. National Preparedness Month is one of the ways to educate the population for unexpected situations and preserve people’s lives as it is aimed to “support emergency preparedness efforts and encourage Americans to take action.”(CDC, 2015). Each of us must learn as much as possible, be prepared and act wisely in the situation of emergency as it may save many lives.
