St. Gregory views the Trinity the overall head of the three subjects; God, Son and the Holy Spirit, a concept that no human being can conceive. He places too much importance on the Angels of God they represent the magnificent beauty of God. Human beings can only comprehend about the trinity if they fully appreciate the majesty of the angels. According to Gregory, the Holy Ghost is in- between God and his Son Jesus Christ, and the oneness of the Lord as represented in the Old Testament. The Triune Sovereign has three different identities that lack temporal separation with no disruption of their mutual connections. The relationship they share reflects in their titles of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The father is the originator an assumption that is affirmed by John in the New Testament the book of John 1: 1-4. In this book, Jesus denotes the son of God as the Word of God. He affirms that God is the originator while the son came about because of God’s expression in ‘typological exergies’.
According to Gregory, the Holy Spirit is God by either being a substance or the characteristic of a substance. The Holy Spirit is an ingenerate coming from two beings that originate or a generate that is beloved and comes from either the Father or the son. If the Holy Spirit comes from the Father, then the Holy Spirit and the son are brothers. If He belongs to Jesus, then God is the grandfather to the Holy Spirit. Gregory then concludes that the Holy Spirit is neither a ‘generate or ingenerate’ and Jesus Christ is called a begotten son of God. The Holy Spirit proceeds from the father; He is eliminated from the option of being a creature or a son, therefore qualifying to be God.
Gordon Fee, on the other hand, asserts that Paul’s encounter with God marked the beginning of the trinity theology. He draws this assumption from Paul’s messages an example being Ephesians 4 and 1st Corinthians chapter 12 scriptures that explain the role the Holy Spirit play in a Christian’s life. Believers should view the Holy Ghost as the early down payment God has paid for their inheritance of the kingdom. The Holy Spirit contributes majorly to their salvation life, thus the need to experience all the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The Christians should understand that God’s nature appears through the unity of the trinity and its diversification.
Gregory’s writings are more philosophical and logical as compared to Fee’s views that are theological. Gregory refers to bible scriptures in an outright manner as compared to Fee. Instead of using allegories and interpretations, he tries as much to present the content in the Bible directly. He is of the opinion that the Bible is clear on all of its messages and never contradicts its self. He uses philosophical and logical explanations to counter the critics. Fee on the other hand sticks on what Paul wrote on theology to remain safe from many criticisms. Gregory also makes some deep teachings on the trinity and its relation to the Holy Spirit while Fee sticks to the theological interpretation of Paul’s writings. He, however, repeats his views unnecessarily and is very argumentative, inefficient and redundant in nature. Fee, on the other hand, reveals that in Paul’s writing, he did not explicitly focus on the deity of the trinity as perceived by many Christians.
