In this progress report, I will discuss waste reduction and recycling in my neighborhood. Over the past, communities have failed to implement policies that will curb environmental pollution. I have realized that many people fail to take up the responsibility to ensure that we live in a friendly environment. For instance, in my neighborhood, people are ignorant and dispose of garbage and other wastes in a careless manner. The problem of waste management has become a hard nut to crack because stakeholders have lacked the incentive to come up with solutions that will fix the situation. After visiting my relatives in different states, I realized that my beauty of living in a clean environment. For this reason, I decided to be in the frontline to create awareness amongst my community members on the best ways of waste reduction and recycling.
Recommendations
In order to guarantee a zero waste future in my neighborhood, I will;
Create a comprehensive Zero Waste Action Plan
Liaise with the local municipal to provide accessible recycle bins in public places
Encourage the local school to come up with waste management programs within the school
Sanction the use of Polystyrene take-out food containers
Evidence
Why I should create a comprehensive Zero Waste Action Plan
A zero waste approach is a convenient and efficient strategy that shields the environment from pollution. The action plan will change the manner in which the community deals with the waste management and institute strategies that will automatically reduce garbage and debris in my neighborhood. The plan will also emphasize on recycling and re-use of materials thus evading wastage of natural resources. The Action Plan will provide the limelight to utilize public money in funding programs regarding waste reduction and recycling.
Why I should liaise with the local municipal to provide accessible recycle bins in public places
I realized that my neighborhood lacked enough recycle bins in public places. If the local municipal can provide available recycle bins, individuals will take the responsibility to dispose of wastes in the bins. Through awareness, high chances are that more trash will be diverted from landfill for recycling. Increased sensitivity will force people to perform the right thing and avoid carelessness in disposing of waste and other materials.
Why I should encourage with the local school to come up with waste management programs within the school
Local schools play a significant role in community education since they shape the change of behavior. Well-informed students will assist their households to practice waste management and recycling practices in the recommended manner. Students will learn about environmental sustainability, and they will develop best practices to help them in decision-making. The parents who lack know-how will learn from their children, and this will boost waste management in the entire neighborhood.
Why I should encourage the prohibition of the use of polystyrene take-out food containers
My neighborhood should discourage the use of polystyrene take-out food containers since they pollute the environment. It will necessary to introduce the recyclable take-out containers, and this will reduce the amount of wastes in the environment. Polystyrene is only used once and then dumped, a practice that should be avoided at all cost. Replacing the polystyrene containers with the biodegradable ones will be an important step towards a zero waste future.
