Optical lenses are devices that could transmit light which could affect the focusing of light with the process of refraction (Brewster np). There are two major types of optical lenses which is the simple lens and the compound lens. A simple lens only consists of a single type or piece of material while the compound lens is combined simple lenses which are usually in contact in a single axis. The most common objects used in lenses are glass. The required materials to use in lenses are transparent objects. They are polished in different shapes in order to form images like the mechanism in the prism.
One major type of geometrical optics lenses is the Fresnel Lenses. A Fresnel lens is an example of a compound or compact lens which is developed by Augustin-Jean Fresnel who is a French Physicist. Augustin-Jean Fresnel develops this type of optics lens in order to transmit large amounts of light in the lighthouses (Brewster np). The design of the Fresnel lenses includes large aperture which has short focal lengths. This type of design allows having a low measurement of mass and volume of geometrical optics lenses which could transmit large amounts of light. Fresnel lenses are also consisting of thinner comparable lens which could capture more oblique lights from the dark surroundings of lighthouses.
The main objective of Fresnel lenses is to reduce the amount of materials compared to the traditional lenses used in lighthouses. It reduces the required amount of materials to be used by dividing the parts of the Fresnel lenses into sections of concentric annular spaces (Brewster np). The overall thickness of the Fresnel lenses are reduced which effectively divides the continuous surface of the traditional or the standard lenses.
