Variables and Measures
Assume that researchers conducted a study about real estate. Suppose, in a particular city of the United States two regions are observed – suburban and urban. The researchers are interested which factors affect the price of houses in these regions. They collect a random sample of 100 houses sold. The variables were the following:
Area – the number of square meters in the house sold
Bathrooms – the number of bathrooms
Bedrooms – the number of bedrooms
Region – the location of the house (Urban/Suburban)
I follow the steps in instructions for this assignment.
Hypotheses:
There is a significant association between price and area
There is a significant association between price and bedrooms
There is a significant association between price and bathrooms
There is a significant difference in prices between two regions of the city.
Independent and dependent variables
A dependent variable is Price
Independent variables are: Area, Bathrooms, Bedrooms, Region.
Definition of what I try to measure
For first three hypotheses I would like to measure the association between the variables. The one of the most common measure in this case is Pearson’s correlation coefficient.
The last hypothesis relates to some test for mean difference. I’m interested if the difference between average prices for urban and suburban prices is significantly differs from 0.
Variables operationalization
In this case all variables are numerical (all are measurable) and do not need any operationalization, except the last variable. But this variable is factor (dummy variable).
Measurements
The variables are ratio variables and they are numerically measured. The study is fictional and there is nothing to cite here.
Items, indicator or composite measure
The observations of our variables are single items.
Attributes
For numerical quantitative data there is no need to explain any attributes.
Type of measurement
My measurements are mutually exclusive for all variables
