There are various resiliency factors that enable remarried families to adjust together. Families have to put up more effort aimed at realizing good outcome. Families need to ensure appropriate application of resilience adaptation and adjustment in order to achieve a fit to varying levels, especially after remarrying. The level requires the establishment of balance that comprises of the concerned individual towards the family as well as the family towards the entire community.
Studies carried out by different researchers emphasizes two phases of resilience. The phases start with adjustment stage followed by adaptation stage. Since the study of resilience encompasses the relationship of an individual to a family as well as a family to the community, there is a need to identify various resilience patterns (Brown 2012). The level of the patterns has to be determined to enable proper classification of either individual’s resilience, family resilience or both. For instance, a child’s resilience can be measured by considering behavior and response of the child.
In order to determine and assess resilience in remarried families, the test re-test kind of reliability has to be established for the instrument. The test re-test as an instrument for determining resilience is better placed in determining the reliability scale by using short scales when determining complex constructs. In order to fully apply the test re-tests reliability scale, a development of 15-hardiness scale is designed from the long version referred to as Dispositional Resilience Scale. The Dispositional Resilience Scale falls under adaptation phase and enables attainment of good internal consistency, brevity as well as validity. The sample size employed in the study comprised of 45 participants, comprising of 29 parents with 16 adolescents (Brown 2012).
The study took a total of three weeks during which the subjects had to fill an open ended questionnaire. The questionnaire had a total of seven questions targeting specific issues and areas affecting individuals and families after remarrying. The sample questions covered areas such supportive family relationships, sense of controlling outcomes in life as well as supportive and affirmative communication. Also, the question incorporated listing activities that help families stay together for long and peacefully, strong relationship in marriage, any form of support received from friends or family, existence of spirituality and religion in the family (Martindale et al 2009).
The study applied descriptive statistics to acquire and analyze biographical information from the subjects under study. Analysis of quantitative data involved the use of correlation approach while qualitative data required the use of content analysis. Positive results were obtained concerning problem-solving, communication, family hardiness, family routine and time, for both adolescents and the adults (Martindale et al 2009). Acquiring social support also presented a positive resulting. In case of qualitative data, the results revealed a certain theme in both adolescents and adults. The themes include flexibility, tolerance, spirituality, boundaries and communication. After the study, the results showed a test retest reliability and validity coefficient of 78 (Bartone 2007). In general, test and re-test conducted on the subjects proved to be valid as well as reliable. The results were confirmed by positive responses obtained from qualitative and quantitative data provided by both adults and the adolescents. The information documented in the researched literature also formed convincing evidence on the applicability of the instrument.
