SELF CARE 1

Learning about trauma and the treatment of trauma can have adverse effects on a clinician. We are in a position to work with clients and help them develop self care plans for themselves so that they can deal with their own trauma. Unfortunate side effects for the clinician are their reactions and emotions that can be triggered by trauma, whether it is in practice or being exposed to it in the classroom.
Fifty percent of therapists feel “stressed” when working with trauma victims and as many as 30% feel extreme distress (Michenbaum). Being aware of possible vicarious traumatization is the first step in taking care of one’s self. One way to do this is to take an inventory or standardized checklist. For myself, I prefer to journal every evening and review my journal periodically.
Dr, Michenbaum also suggests self soothing activities. Yoga and guided meditation are excellent activities to calm the mind and body. Any type of hobby or activity that is relaxing will help in self soothing as well; I enjoy gardening and photography. I also like to walk, this something I can easily do everyday to reduce by stress and reset my mind.
One of the signs that a clinician may be overwhelmed and being adversely affected by trauma is social withdrawal and isolation. It is important to find support with peers. Through discussion and support of each other, it is easier to deal with the stress of trauma. In the professional world, continuing education classes and professional groups are excellent places to meet others in the same position. Sharing ideas and communication often help ease the stress.

SELF CARE 2

As a future clinician, it is important that I take care of myself: physically, mentally; emotionally and spiritually. By doing this, I will have better success with my practice and patients. I will also be taking care of myself so that I might deliver the best services to my patients.
