Diabetes is defined as an imbalance in blood sugar or a spike in blood glucose that is not only unhealthy but can, when left untreated, lead to serious complications and even death. This is not one single disease but instead a host of other diseases that are the same with characteristic differences that must be treated according to their type.
There are three different types of diabetes; Type 1, which involves the body not producing insulin at all, Type 2, in which not enough insulin is produced for the body to fully function, and Gestational Diabetes, which affects pregnant women.
This group of diseases is generally long-term and can cause serious health risks. There are very common ways to identify diabetes such as increased frequency in urination, increased hunger and thirst, unusual weight gain or loss, unexplained fatigue, a persistent numb feeling in the extremities, and even wounds that don’t seem to heal properly. While diabetes is a persistent and still rising set of diseases, it is easier to control now than it has been in the past thanks to research and study that has identified what is needed and what is missing.
A healthy diet and active lifestyle can help to stave off the worst effect of diabetes, and the use of insulin, when needed, can help the body maintain its delicate balance in order to maintain health. This is particularly important with Gestational Diabetes, as the health of both the mother and the fetus are at risk. Overall diabetes is not curable, but it is manageable when one takes the proper precautions and minds their health.
