The Atomic Bomb: An Engineering Success or a Failure?
In the digital world of today, we see wonders of Science and Engineering in all aspects of life. Innovation in the field of Engineering has eased our life significantly. The efforts of Engineers must be oriented towards betterment of mankind and for the protection of safety, public health and welfare . They must exhibit highest level of ethical conduct in their profession .
Nuclear technology has evolved quite rapidly since the World War II. It has been employed for peaceful as well as destructive purposes. The invention of the Atomic Bomb is a major breakthrough in this regard. The main purpose of designing and manufacturing this deadly bomb is to ensure the high degree of integrity of defense for a country. The Atomic Powers can hold their head high while talking about their defense and can be proud of their technology. The Atomic bomb should only be used against the enemies using similar kinds of nuclear weapons.
The Atomic Bomb is an Engineering success to place the name of the nation quite high in terms of national defense. When you consider the efforts of Nazi Engineers of Germany during World War II, they were under pressure from USA and European countries for building deadly weapons to destruct enemies. It was need of the hour to design Atom Bomb to stay alive in Cold War. Later, America carried out the deadly atomic bombings on Nagasaki and Hiroshima that barely left anybody alive there, completely destructing that part of the world.
In short, Engineers designed the Atomic Bomb with highest sense of integrity for defense, but some political influences resulted in the misuse of these weapons during World War II. Engineering failure is attributed to the lack of knowledge of side effects. But, overall Atomic Bomb is an Engineering success considering its significance for a country’s defense.
