American English is one of the dominant languages all over the world. Many countries across the globe have huge populations that speak in American English. However, there are basic differences that American English has with other forms of English. British English is another popular form of English that is spoken by many people in the world.
One of the major distinctions is that of pronunciation. There is difference in the pronunciation of vowels and consonants. There is distinction in the matter of stress and intonation in the two forms of English language. The difference of verbs, nouns, and usage of phrasal verbs is also very conspicuous. Each language, and of course English, consists of a set of sounds or phonemes. Phonology is a branch of linguistics that deals with systematic organization of these sounds in various languages. With the help of development of grammatical competence, one can learn which sound make a difference in meaning and that is very important for an English learner. (Freeman & Freeman, 2011)
Moreover, there is a major difference in the spellings of the words in the two forms of English language. This is one major aspect that people from the eastern part of the world have to adapt. Thus, American English differs from the English language that is spoken in other countries that are mainly post-colonial nations. While the English in the countries of the east is much more formal in its approach, American English is informal when it comes to speaking. Also, the idiosyncrasies of American English make it very interesting for a person learning the language. Even though, that in post-colonial countries English at the very high level, people may have poorer phonological awareness and are not able to extract phonological patterns of second language. (Hu, 2013)
Thus, the knowledge of the elements that are specific to American English would be extremely useful in working with English language learners. The form of English language is one of the most popular and dominant ones in the world society. Hence, it is of omnipotent importance to understand and learn the nuances of American English to be well-versed in the language. Leaving aside formality in language, American English satiates the purpose of human expression in the truest sense of the word with the basic elements that are special to the language.
