What did you learn? What is your reaction to the movie?

Through the reading and movie, I have learned the sea life is under great threat and some sea species may become extinct due to overfishing, destruction of marine environment due to deep sea mining and hunting of some species such the dolphins to keep them in the park or use them as food. I am shock and devastated by what have seen in the movie, the people who are supposed to protect the sea and sea animals such as the police and the government are silent on this matter. The dolphins are in the verge of becoming extinct such as the moa, the Caribbean monk seal and Atlas bear.
How does ‘The Cove’ apply to international politics/relations? (I’m looking for more than just “it happens in Japan” or “dolphins swim in the ocean”) - the more connections you make the more points. Do some thinking about what you saw in the movie.
What’s happening in Taiji Japan could happen anywhere and this is just an example of what is actually happening around the globe. Additionally, when the fishermen have exhausted all the dolphins at the Taiji Japan, they will move to other areas in such of their precious commodities. Thus, to make sure this menace is eliminate throughout the globe, the international community need to come together and form policies and regulations which will control fishing and exportation of the sea product.
What did the person in the movie mean when they said that individuals can achieve more change than international institutions? What were they referring to? Do you agree? Why or Why not? Explain.
Individuals of effort will make a big change in this fight to save the marine ecosystem. The change we want to witness should start from individuals. We must start addressing the issues of sea destruction from our homes and community. We have take the responsibility of teaching and educating people on our locality the threat of extinction some of the marine species are facing. The international institution may make laws but the locals may refuse to obey and implement the measures put in place by the international institutions. As Douglas McCauley said, we have not yet destroyed the ocean; there is part which can still be saved (Plumer, 2015). Thus, it is individual efforts which will make sure the environment is not destroyed completely.
These sentiments were referring to Ric O'Barry. He has taken his time and resources to highlight the dangers faced by the dolphins in Japan. Therefore, agree with the statement. Ric is an example of an individual who has achieved a lot through his initiative.
Is this just a cultural issue? Are there similar things that we do in America that Japanese might point to and say that we are wrong? What do you think?
This is not a cultural issues but the reality of the things which are happening around the globe. This is one example which is showing how human activities are destroying the sea. The Americans tolerate massive deep sea fishing, under the sea mining and building of houses close to the ocean shores. These activities are destroying the marine environment through pollution and causing depletion of marine resources. Additionally, the Americans have marines and parks which have kept the animals captive instead of allowing them to live in their natural habitat. Thus, we should not entirely point fingers at the Japan, but we must make change on how we treat the sea creatures and how we use the ocean resources.
Do you think that this type of environmental issue (destruction of marine life) is something that we have to worry about? Or do you think that humans and technology will find a way to solve it (read “Networking Nature” and the other readings).
The destruction of marine life is a threat to the general ecosystem. When this balance of the ecosystem is destroyed the source of food to some sea creature and humans will also be destroyed. This will bring chaos and massive deaths due to hunger. This may result in extinctions of some species. The humans will also suffer since some of their source food might become extinct. On the other hand, the technology is making tremendous progress (Alan, 2013). Thus, the technology will be instrumental in the near future in detecting any poaching activity against any protected sea animal.
What did you find in your search of the internet? What follow-up information did you find on “The Cove.” Give me a brief summary. Show me your search and find skills!!
The cove is a group of activist who are engaged in exposing the danger faced by the dolphins at Taijii, Japan. The leader of the group is Ric O'Barry, who is renowned and accomplished dolphin trainer. The group is armed with sophisticated and state of the art equipment which they are using to expose animal abuse and how serious the destruction is to human life (IMDb, 2009).
