The impact of the programs instituted by the Microsoft Company goes unnoticed by many consumers, and this has been a problem over a long duration of time. The paper will comprehensively address the existing differences between Corporate Social Responsibility and conscious capitalism company drawing insights from Microsoft and Container Store Company.
As a CSR company, Microsoft ensures that it serves the society needs across the globe and also fulfilling the responsibilities in delivering services to the public. Microsoft builds on ethical business conduct and governance in its operation. The company performed an annual training across the universe in more than 17 different languages. Microsoft Company is always committed to serving the community by allocating adequate resources to support various initiatives that are helpful to the people. For instance, The Microsoft YouthSpark Initiative aims at establishing opportunities for more than 300 million young people. Moreover, the Microsoft Company ensures that it demonstrates a high level of responsible sourcing. The companies that are awarded contracts by Microsoft must demonstrate corrective action plans and play a significant role towards promoting environmental health and safety. Microsoft does not cooperate with companies associated with serious nonconformance issues if fail to respect the ethical, social, and environmental factors that affect the society at large.
Contrary, The Container Store Company attributes its success to the practice of conscious capitalism. The CEO of this company, Mr. Tindell argued that Conscious Capitalism is deeply rooted in treating all the stakeholders with due respect. The stakeholders might include the workforce, customers, vendors, and shareholders. Conscious capitalism companies create win-win-win situations so that everyone can benefit from its operations. Since time immemorial, The Container Store Company awards high salaries to its workers compared to other companies. Tindell argued that the company believes in this philosophy. He claimed, “If we take care of employees better than anyone else they will take care of customers better than anyone else” (Tupponce,2015). The employees working for conscious capitalism companies receive high salaries compared to those working at CSR companies. For example, the Container Store generates an annual revenue of more than $800 and compensate their sales associates with a salary that exceeds the industry standard by more than $50,000. Microsoft companies allocate resources that are aimed at improving the status within the community by initiative helpful programs as demonstrated by Microsoft YouthSpark Initiative.
The C.E.O of Container Store Company said that the firm ensures that the employees are satisfied with the working conditions and the salary offered to them. Therefore, he emphasizes on the need to motivate the workforce assuming that it will automatically lead to higher productivity in the workplace. Leaders of Conscious Capitalism companies have a huge moral responsibility of inspiring employees to work out their nest in their assigned duties and responsibilities. The top leadership in the company is also responsible for ensuring that it promotes transparency and effective communication on a daily basis. The most important philosophy centered on conscious capitalism companies to it ensures that the employees are highly satisfied with the conditions of employment. The Container Store Company treats it employees well. Referring to employees, Tindell says, “If we are nurtured and developed and allowed to succeed, our esteem goes up, and we are most productive.”
Microsoft Company interacts with its stakeholders in a deferential and ethical manner as supported by applicable laws and requirements. The employees undergo training programs so that they can be induced by ideas that meet the standards in compliance systems. The training also helps them to deal with challenging situations in the workplace. The company is also tied to Political Engagement Policies that promotes transparency and accountability and condemns giving bribes and other corruption activities. Microsoft was awarded as the top CSR Company, and the wonderful validation made it get recognized across the globe. The company had initiated two philanthropy campaigns namely YouthSpark and 30th Employee Giving Campaign. The employees of this company are expected to donate funds that are used to sponsor activities within the community. These initiatives engage the local community, and they cooperate with the company so that they benefit. The donations and charities create a good relation with the community, and this makes Microsoft acceptable and popular with the population.
The Microsoft Company is a profit-driven organization that heavily invests in corporate social responsibilities to earn the goodwill from its customers. In this way, the community does not realize if the company poses any harm that directly affects them since they are already blindfolded with the already initiated projects. On the other hand, Conscious companies like the Container Store are always societally aligned. Container Store does not allocate any funds to sponsor philanthropic projects but always ensures that they remain socially responsible. Companies that believe in conscious capitalism are sensitive towards their environment of operation, and they conduct their business in a way that it positively contributes to the goodwill of the society.
