The humor in the Importance of Being Earnest basically relies on creating awkward characters and situations. These characters lack proper insight which cost them to inappropriately respond to situations. For instance, Jack is seen to lead a double life. He claims to have a brother by the name Ernest. However this brother is fictional and therefore does not exist as he claims. Ernest is the name that Jack uses when in town to enable him get involved in mischief. Algernon has also developed ways that portrays him as leading a double life. Indeed, he pretended to be Jack’s brother Ernest in order to get married to Cecily. He has also been pretending to have a relapsing friend living in the country thus giving him opportunities to go to the country whenever he likes. These tricks have enabled them to lead lives that are disapproved in the Victorian society.
It is evident that both Jack and Algernon are careless about their identity. For instance, they have been using the name ‘Ernest’ in different occasions in order to hide their true identity. However, the name depicts a different picture depending on the character who uses it. Jack also takes himself more seriously as opposed to Algernon. This has made Algernon more likeable. In addition, Algernon has proved to have a less habitual deceptive nature when compared to Jack. For instance, he is seen to take a very innocent delight especially when creating the Bunbury fiction when he discovered jack’s deception. Moreover, Algernon is seen to enjoy city pleasures just like his friend Jack. However, Algernon likes offering civilized account in terms of marriage, Victorian life and moral and social class.
