1.1: Thesis objective
We are undertaking this project research due to the realization that breast cancer is one of the most common cancers and despite the huge improvement in treatment therapy, there is a large amount of people who do not survive. Therefore, the main objective is to improve the treatment of breast cancer in general and breast cancer in specific by looking at the role of XIAP in Breast cancer. We are investigating new molecular targets that can be used as a potential therapeutic modality for the treatment of breast cancers.
The aim of the above investigations is to focus on the role of XIAP in breast cancer developments and the development of molecular targets that will directly target a protein that will be involved in a growth signaling various pathways that will represent a new paradigm in the treatment of breast cancer. In addition to that, the investigations will focus on the therapeutic strategies that target other molecules involved in breast cancer development. The progressions in this field of study are on the horizon as per the recent developments and findings on the importance of embellin and the role of XIAP in breast cancer. Embellin, a quinine derivative, which has shown to have a variety of therapeutic potentials including anti-tumor, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammation, and antibacterial capacities that represents a model for the future of breast cancer treatment, directed towards a specific molecular target (Aird). Therefore, it is of essence that pathologists become aware of these advances and assume a pivotal role in the development and application of these molecular targets.
1.2: Thesis Significance
1.3: Thesis Organization
We have researched the role of Xiap in breast cancer cell lines in order to study the expression of Xiap, followed by targeting the proteins with molecular inhibitors to investigate whether these molecular inhibitors can inhibit cell viability and induce apoptosis in breast cancer cell lines, and if they do what is the mode of action of these inhibitors.
One of the major difficulties in the treatment of cancer is the resistance to therapy, which ultimately results in cancer recurrence and high patient mortality (Conte). Previous studies identified that overexpression of XIAP in acquired resistance to certain IBC cell lines results in reduced breast cancer activity. We have identified that XIAP as molecular targets and determined that XIAP is an important sensitizer in beating the resistance of human cell lines developed from metastatic breast cancers to apoptosis induction to suppress the metastasis. In addition to that, the depletion of XIAP increased apoptosis in response to the IAP antagonists with some pro-apoptotic agents that enhances apoptosis of breast cancer cells.
