Photography has generally evolved over time. From the old colorless photos to the modern digital instant photographs. Domestic photography has also grown tremendously. With the advent of social media, photography has become a new form of passing information, it speaks faster and more widely than words do. People want to share moments on social media, as soon as it happens. Currently trending is the ‘selfie’, which has become a quick way of expressing oneself without the need for third party assistance in doing so. Photography has become the tool in social media communication, is social media, photography is the language.
Using the photos collected overtime, one is able to analyze and describe trends and the changing face of photography. The project ‘Are You Happy,’ undertaken by Photomediations collects videos and photos from people all over the world and analyses the m for any patterns((Photomediations Machine, n.p). From this project, we learn that social media photography is an avenue for obtaining live data. With sites like Instagram where one can upload feeds of live reality, social media photography becomes the new way of communication. Other sites like Facebook also offer time lines where people can tell their stories through photos without using traditional text. Spreading a message through social media is also easier done through photography. Photography is therefore an effective communication tool in social media.
Social media photography also provides a means to learn and compare cultures. The project taken by the City University of New York makes a comparison of selfies taken in different cities. The research proves the role of social media photography as a means of studying cultures, trends, perceptions and growth((City University of New York, para. 3). Social media photography therefore provides current database for presentations of culture through photography, like the selfie. Social media has, therefore, provided an avenue for analyzing demographics in society in relation to photography. Photography, according to the City University research, also provides an avenue for analyzing the trends in technology and their usage. According to Sarvas, social media photography is therefore a good means for examining the future of photography and the trends in culture((Sarvas and Frohlich, 116-121).
Looking at the growing interest in social media photography, it is clear that it is an important aspect of photography. Social media trends indicate that photography is synonymous with social media. The successes of photo sharing sites like Instagram further demonstrate the crucial role of photography in social media. It also shows that the larger population appreciates and has taken into photography to express themselves. This is especially so with the younger generation who take majority of the selfies (City University, para. 12). The growth and fame of trends in photography also point out just how much social media is dependent on photography. For example, the current hype about selfies. Selfies have been taken for a long time, but it took social media to bring it out and make it trendy.
The growing research into social media photography and the many social networking cites that depend and thrive on photography prove that social media photography plays a huge role in passing the ‘message.
