Transactional Leadership in South Africa: Article Review

Background: South Africa is an emerging industrial power in the world and the most developed in the region. Post-apartheid South Africa in the business sense is dominated by elites who are given the opportunity to succeed by the ruling party. The President at the time was Jacob Zuma.
Objective: The question behind the article is whether or not South Africa is suffering from transactional leadership. It hypothesizes that South African leadership is only using transactional leadership while ruling the country.
Method: The article compares the situation in South Africa and the economic and business climate to that of Yeltin’s Russia. It brings in historical information and makes the comparisons in order to show that South Africa is very similar to the mafia driven, socialist, agenda that Russia was.
Main Finding: The article finds that South Africa is economically hurting because of the use of transactional leadership within the government and amongst the business leaders. It shows that the government, and especially the President is the cause of the transactional leadership environment and the suffering of the country.
Discussion: South Africa’s business environment is not conducive to success because of the transactional leadership of the government. Business contracts are awarded to cronies and those who support the ruling party. The economy is driven by a metaphorical mafia, which in turn is not helping South Africa progress amongst the world stage.
Recommendation: The article recommends that transactional leadership not be applied to South Africa. They call for Zuma, the then South African president to leader in the transactional sense and that the leadership should have the best interests of South Africa in mind.
