Union Pacific Corporation is a company that provides rail service to 23 American states all over the Western United States, Midwest, and Mexico. It has a fleet of over 8300 locomotives and operates 31, 800 miles of track (Union Pacific, 2015). Its main transport goods include automobiles, agricultural goods, petroleum products and chemicals.
The company operates all over America and into Mexico. In terms of social analysis, the industry should ensure society is strong, the healthy and just. It entails accommodating diverse people with diverse needs, encouraging social cohesion, good governance and engaging in creativity for improvement of mankind. With technological advancements, efficient and environmental power sources and fuels are necessary (Dransfield, Fox, Guy, Needham, & Wilde, 2004). Locomotive tracking and faster transportation will be a necessity for the company to remain relevant. Politically, the company is subject to government to government regulation as well as union issues. Federal and state laws limit and slow down its improvement and growth.
Economic hurdles impair their ability to remain solvent and operate given that the industry is sensitive to the economic conditions (Renner & Gardner, 2010). Fluctuating fuel prices, maintenance of infrastructure, and substitute means of transport affect their bottom line. Road transportation remains less costly than rail. Environmental issues entail the rail company’s effect on “mother nature” (Dransfeld et al., 2004). Going Green and reducing their carbon footprint is necessary for a company to win over clients. More sustainable sources of energy are necessary to limit damage and depletion of natural resources.
Union Pacific will have to maneuver all these obstacles in a calculated manner. It should offer equal and fair opportunity and accommodate individuals from every walk of life. Politically, it should obey the law and if need be lobby for favorable legislation. It needs an R & D Department for technological development to keep abreast of innovative discoveries. Union Pacific should employ green ambassadors to market their environmental consciousness and activities of conservation. America enjoying an economic recovery is a boost to their operations.
