One of the most essential and memorable individuals in the course of history in the nurse practice was Mary Ezra Mahoney. First of all, it is important to mention that when she was born in 1845, there still was a slave-owning system in the United States. Aside from that, nevertheless, Mary Ezra Mahoney was a very good nurse and, with the help of her persistence, perseverance and her talent of being nurse, she became first African American who studied how to be nurse and worked professionally in this sphere. I think that this requires a lot of strength both physical and spiritual. I admire her efforts to uplift the mundane of African American and generally to improve their life conditions. In addition, it is safe to say that Mary Ezra Mahoney was and, in fact is a great example and role model for people to believe in their power and to believe in themselves.
For a long time, it is possible to say that even with the origin of the nursing, this job is still seen as an only to be accepted by women and is viewed as an occupation with low status. In spite of these stereotypes, I really want to become a nurse. From time to time, when I tell people that I want to become nurse and want to dedicate my life to nursing, I would receive questions like: “Why on Earth do you want to be a nurse? It is very dirty and not very well-paid job! Do you want to constantly clean after someone, or do you want to never be on holidays with your family?”
They do not understand, that it is a deep desire to help people that are in suffer or in pain. It is hard to say, how many jobs make people really happy and joyful. Of course, nursing job is extremely hard and not everyone is suitable for it, there is no doubt about that. However, when you see people’s faces with relief and happiness, this makes me happy. I want to be a nurse because I feel like it was one of the most rewarding careers a person can hold.
There was a lot of people that admired me and was a truly star to steer by. These women that showed such great strength and willpower, were not mostly very rich people, with intellectual heritage, although with the help of their desire to be a nurse and to help people they were at the high. Such people were and are a bright spot in the course of nursing.
Sojourner Truth, Susie King Taylor, Adah Belle Samuel Thoms, Mabel Keaton, Staupers, Lillian Holland Harvey, Mary Ezra Mahoney (Jdmitchelldesigns.wordpress.com, 2015) and lots of other prominent nurses rested on oars. Personally for me, Mary Ezra Mahoney was the most important person and I marvel her greatly. I hope that someday, I will have enough strength and power to try to do something groundbreaking and useful for community of our country and the whole world.
I hope that with the help of her example, I would be able to overcome any problem that I will face in my life, regardless will it be connected with nursing or just with my life. However, I do not want to do this only for fame, glory and admiration, absolutely not. All I ever wanted to do is to help people, to help them to be healthy and happy. My goal is to learn as much as it is possible to become a great nurse.
That is the main goal for a nurse. That what these women showed us, that regardless of your skin color or of your gender and race everything is possible and doable. I know that there will be plenty of people that will be even better than these women and I hope that I will a part of their team someday.
If I become wealthy and I would have an estate, I would probably leave it to some charity organization. Or the best scenario for that is to reconstruct this building into free clinic for people with low income or for people without insurance. Undoubtedly, this requires huge amount of money not only for reconstruction but also to keep this clinic alive.
Therefore, a lot of sponsors should be attracted to help people and to help funding this clinic. Furthermore, government support could be very essential and lifesaving. Another way whom to leave this estate, is also to some charity organization for them to sell it and to give money for people that are in need.
Speaking about donations that could be made in my honor, it is essential to mention that all money that sympathetic and compassionate people would send to me, must be sent to some charity organization. It does not matter, where they will be sent, to help to find cure for cancer, or to treat Alzheimer disease. If the money will help people that are suffering and needing that help, I would be more than happy. Unfortunately, money is not always a solution in helping people, although that is the least that could be done.
Moreover, it is also a very good idea to resend all this money to nurses who have very low salary and who find hard to do their job. In that case, it would be great to inspire people to do their job better and to make other people happy and healthy.
