Free Why I Would Like To Participate In A Public Service Externship Program? Personal Statement Example

I am a second year student at Bowen School of Law. I am about to complete my graduation in the spring of 2016. The reasons why I would like to participate in a public service externship program are varied. From a professional perspective, the public service externship program being an experiential learning course would provide me with an opportunity to obtain hands-on experience on matters related to public service. In this externship program, I would get the opportunity to work under the supervision of practicing lawyers and judges on a variety of challenging tasks and their valuable feedbacks would help me improve my learning skills and would benefit me to strengthen my legal expertise. The practical experience of working with the legal experts would also help me in learning how to deal with challenging scenarios and thus, prepare me for my future career.
The public service externship program would also give me the opportunity to explore my career interests and take future career decisions. Since at the program, I would have the learning experience of working for the welfare of the community, I would get the exposure to federal and state courts, non-profit organizations, and government offices at the state, federal or local level. Each of these settings would give me unique and distinct learning opportunities related to specific areas of law, and thereby, would help me develop problem-solving skills, lawyering skills and the skill of serving the public. This exposure to different areas of law would help me decide on the future course of my career.
The personal reason why I am interested in joining the public service externship program is because it would help me fulfill my childhood dream. I have grown up seeing my parents dedicating a good chunk of their time to social work. They are both devout Christians who believe that a true citizen must give back to the society. They were and are involved in a number of social work and community development projects. They are associated with non-profit organizations and provide their valuable service for various social purposes. They also take part in the state church welfare program voluntarily once a week.
My father is a great advocate of human rights. He has instilled a belief in me that all people, irrespective of color, race, and economic status, deserve equality in treatment. My father has taught me never to discriminate and treat everyone with respect. I have seen him taking participation in pride parades in New York every year in the fight for equal rights for the LGBT community. He has inspired me that it is the responsibility of every good human being to fight for the rights of others. From my childhood days, I have cherished the desire to make a difference in public life. My aim has always been to take up a profession through which I will be able to enhance the quality of life of other human beings, and I believe that by joining the profession of law, I would get the opportunity to provide for the welfare of the community and contribute to the greater public good. Since public service program tries to serve the society by protecting the rights of citizens and helping the government organizations run effectively, I believe that by being a part of the system, I would be able to serve the community and dedicate myself for the service of others, just as my parents did.
