Question 1

Family is the basic unit of a society and hence the reason why it has to be guarded and established in the right virtues. In as much it may be argued that family occurs naturally through the processes of procreation, it is artificial in many aspects. For instance, the very decision to be attracted to the opposite sex and procreate has to be made by consenting parties. Man and woman both have to be ready to enter to any union, whether officially or casually. Improvements in technology and modern medical developments also make it possible for [partners to decide whether they want to have and even keep children. This therefore means that sex will not always have to give rise to a family unit or even having the children. Through family planning, a couple may decide to have sex without necessarily being parents.
The definition of family and its composition has changed over time from just being composed of man, woman and children. The strict laws that required that man and woman, at a particular age have been modified to ensure that the family unit is independently artificial. This therefore implies that even after entering into a family unit, a man and a woman are not compelled to stay together. A family can still be composed of a man and woman without children or either of the parties with the children. The natural occurrence of a family required that man and woman stay together with at least three children irrespective of the circumstances. Considering the pain and affliction that parties had to go through, society has transformed the family unit into an artificial one by letting the partie4s have the power to choose how they desire the unit to be.
The natural unit of a family also defined roles for the parties, and hence making them prisoners in their responsibilities. Man was given authority, which to some extend, made him abusive and inconsiderate. With the artificial unit of marriage, roles and responsibilities can be defined by he parties themselves, rather than having to adhere to certain rules and laws. Man and woman become the center of every decision and can always agree on how to distribute and even share such responsibilities. Despite the issues that have risen in such arrangements where man still wants to be the sole decision maker, laws are being made to ensure that there is freedom for both parties even in a marriage setting. On the other hand, there are families composed of single parents who have a right to stay single and bring up their children without the assistance of the other party.
The advantages of an artificial family unit ensures diversity in a family setting as well as freedom of choice. Yielding to the natural setting of a family unit made it difficult for parent to live and even bring up children in the way they wished. The need to please other people rather than live according to one’s convictions led to frustrations and untold sufferings. Education and information has made people realize that happiness and contentment comes from following individual convictions and not doing things to please a larger society that cannot empathize with the situation at hand. Despite the challenges that the artificial family unit is being faced with, people are learning to adjust and appreciate the circumstances that led to such settings.
