Introduction

Children are the greatest investment one could ever make; this is because they are the hope of the future. Every positive thing that you give to or sacrifice for the sake of your children will eventually help them grow into healthy, happy, and functional members of the society. Unfortunately, not all children get to have the opportunity to grow into those kinds of individuals. The reason behind this is because a lot of children in the world are not being properly taken care of. They still remain to be the most vulnerable members of various communities. Their rights are not being fully protected. Street children are still highly prevalent in most countries. Cases of child rape increase during times of natural disasters (WHO, 2005). Millions of children are unable to go to school (Shepherd, 2010).
These sad truths are the reason why Save the Children exists. Save the Children or STC is an international nonprofit organization that “run world-class programs to save children’s lives and challenge world leaders to keep to their promises to give children a brighter future” (STC n.d., We save children’s lives). It was founded by Eglantyne Jebb in the United Kingdom in the year 1919 (STC n.d., Our history). Jebb was driven to found this organization for children because she saw “the plight of children on the losing side of the First World War” (STC n.d., Our history). Almost a century after, STC is now the world’s leading organization for children, creating lasting changes in children’s lives everywhere. But the fight is not yet over; billions of children are still badly in need of help. And for as long as there is a single child out there whose rights are being violated, STC still refuses to rest. But for STC to succeed, there must be people who are willing to support its cause. And you can do so by providing monthly donations or by signing up to be a field volunteer.

How to Give to ‘Save the Children’

It is a mere fact that in this world, everything has a price; so does saving the children. And the price of saving children is an extremely high one for that matter. Specifically for Save the Children, funds are needed in order to help children during times of emergencies (STC n.d., Our finances). This is why STC needs supporters who can provide monthly donations that will serve as the funding for their emergency operations. People’s donations will help STC provide local communities, families, and children with everything that they need to survive an incoming typhoon. These things include hygiene kits, basic supplies, back-to-school backpacks, and the best of all, birthing kits (STC n.d., Emergencies).
STC is the only nonprofit organization that gives birthing kits to pregnant women for free during times of disasters. The birthing kits are the solution to the problem of pregnant women in the middle of typhoons since they have no access to hospitals, doctors, and electricity. The kits are complete with an instruction manual, flashlight, alcohol, surgical blade, registration for birth certificate, and many more (STC n.d., Emergencies). Surely, mothers everywhere would understand the plight of pregnant women during typhoons and would want to help them in any way they can. Luckily for them, they can easily help their fellow women by providing monthly donations to Save the Children. Not only will these generous donations help the pregnant women, they will also help the newborn babies. It’s a small amount to pay for saving two lives at the same time.
In addition to mothers, educators and healthcare providers should also be able to relate to the cause of STC. Other than the emergency kits that the organization gives to typhoon victims, STC also provides various services during emergencies. These services include providing medical support and providing continuous education (STC n.d., Volunteer). This is because Save the Children values the rights of children to have access to healthcare and education—even if it is in the middle of a natural disaster (STC n.d., Volunteer). And so for people who also see the importance of health and learning, especially when it comes to children, then they can help by signing up to be STC’s field volunteers.
STC is accepting professionals such as doctors, nurses, child psychiatrists, and teachers (STC n.d., Volunteer). There is goal is to “[work] as one team. . . combine skills and experience to create positive change for children” (STC n.d., Volunteer). Of course it would be challenging having to go to the field and experiencing firsthand the difficulties of natural disasters. But it would be even more fulfilling to be able to see firsthand the smiles of the children that you would help save. It will truly be an unforgettable experience to become a hero in the eyes of those children.

Conclusion

Children are the hope of the future generation. But what hope does the future generation have if the children of today are unable to live full, healthy, and happy lives? Save the Children, the world’s leading nonprofit organization for children, is in no way willing to take the risk of knowing the answer to that question. This is why STC has been working for 96 years in order to create a better world for children. But this wouldn’t be possible without the help of like-minded, generous, and kind-hearted people—people like you. If you agree that children’s rights should indeed be protected at all times, then help STC do exactly that. You can do this by simply providing a monthly donation or volunteering as STC’s field worker; either way you would be making a huge impact on the lives of children. If children really are the greatest investment that a person could make, then giving to Save the Children would be one smart investment indeed.
