It is a book about the story of a poor black family’s ambition to attain middle-class acceptance. The story set in the period after the world war II began, after the death of the husband (Younger), the mother(and grandmother) who is sixty years old, Lena Younger, her son Walter and her daughter Beneatha ,is expecting a $10,000 check from the insurance as compensation. The story focuses primarily on how the money should be spent and the family’s war against racism in the Chicago slums.
Despite poverty heat on the family, America’s most complex history of racism tension between the blacks and whites had become a basic ingredient into the Youngers’ daily life. Racism was in every aspect of their life including religion. The societal responsibility assigned to the Youngers’ is also a restriction as Beneatha studies with a dream of becoming a doctor had no tuition fees and Ruth who towards the beginning of the story is pregnant prepares to abort her child since the family’s situation could not sustain another life. To sort all these Younger’s had only one chance to bounce to a fresh start and that’s the ten thousand dollars mail that Lena was expecting.
Minor conflicts bursts over the disagreements between the mother and the son, Walter Lee Younger, who is hopeless with his ambition to be the sore breadwinner of the growing family and works as a chauffeur for a white man intends to venture into a liquor business with the entire sum incorporation with two of his friends. The mother passionately opposes the idea of selling liquor due to ethical reasons and decides to use a portion of the money as down payment a harbor on a neighborhood since the five initially squeeze into a run-down two-bedroom apartment, that’s a space built for three .
The idea makes the conflict between the mother and Walter to intensify which in turn causes her extreme pain. In an attempt to prevent this and make things right between herself and angered Walter, she entrusts him with the remaining amount of the money advising him to keep a good sum of the money to fund Beneatha’s schooling since her performance was impressing. The believe that perhaps the initial investment will multiply by four pushes Lee to immediately invest the money secretly in his liquor store scheme. Unfortunately, one of Walters expected business associate runs off with the money this subjects him and the rest of the family into a mental suffer.
This left the family with no option other than to move on after much wavering and vacillating despite of their monetary reversals. When Karl (white man) comes to buy the new house owned by the Youngers’, Walter made a proper decision to decline the offer and side with the family to ensure they move to their new home. To Walter the family is a religion which even out did his ego.
