Communication, as many of us know, is happening between everybody every second of the day. With our words and silences, and even our body languages, how we use space even dictates what we are saying to one another. Once I began to learn the function of communication, as well as how it is never ceasing, I became fascinated with it. Moreover, when I began to learn its role in society and community, it became more interesting.
York and Ryerson offer a variety of programs that fit my desires in postgraduate studies, specifically between communication and culture. It is observable every day as we are bombarded with technology that it is shaping how we act, how we think, and even how we communicate with one another. E-mail was revolutionary for those of us who did not live near loved ones, and more so, for those of us who wanted to communicate with people in different countries. It created its own subculture, which quickly became the predominant culture of the world. My research question, then, is how technology will continue to shape our world and subsequent communication habits with other cultures.
I have performed prior research based on this question and have discovered there are already impending results on the horizon. Google Glass, for example, is a set of eyewear that will be brought to us by Google. While the product is still not readily available to the public, and similar products made by other companies are currently flooding the market, Google Glass brings us the most promise. Primarily, it brings the assurance of instant communication with anybody of any language, anywhere.
How is this different from how we use our cell phones? We text, email, and have translators on the internet. Google Glass, however, would hear words being spoken in a different language and translate it in front of our eyes for us. It would essentially be instant communication. Should everybody on the planet be equipped with a set of Google’s miraculous glasses, part of every racist’s outcry about our differences would suddenly disappear, the world would be easier to understand, and communication would be revolutionized. That is, of course, if Google is able to work out the typical bugs involved in every translating program.
While assessing how technology of this nature will affect society and technology will take time, there are still many aspects of my research to take on. Examining existing translating programs, as well as if they are used, how often, and if they are successful is necessary. Furthermore, an analysis of whether these translating programs have made a difference in cultural tensions, be them good, or bad, will also be critical to the research. A comparison of cultural relations, as well as societal activities will need to be evaluated prior to the advent of such technologies and after. I would also like to examine how aspects of communication such as proxemics, feedback, eye contact, informational listening, posture, and several other facets in an effort to understand the changes communication is already undergoing within each culture, as well as between them.
