Introduction

The paper will present a plan for the preparation of status report of the Alzheimer’s disease. For the preparation of status reportinformation related to disease causes, factors, demographic data, policies and practices for mental health in Europe, challenges in improving health condition, morbidity and mortality rate, disease prevalence, diagnosis and treatment will be discussed. The paper will present details on the selected sources obtained from various databases including Health for All database, Eurostat Statistics Database and Ebscohost Database. The selected sources are a combination of international as well as academic sources that will be used altogetherin the preparation of Alzheimer status report. The paper will show the importance of each selected source and how it will be used in the status report.
Using ‘Health for All database’two sources were found addressing the prevalence of Alzheimer in the world and Policies and practices for mental health in Europe. The WHO report ‘Prevalence of mental disorders’ will be used in the introduction part to study the prevalence of mental disorders in Europe. This source will be useful in formatting a background for the status report. The article presents a detailed account of the percentages of different mental disorders in different cities of Europe. The article also presents an over view of mental health services available in Europe along with the mental health work force that are dedicated to help people suffering from mental disorders. The morbidity and mortality data will be obtained from WHO (2014) article and will be incorporated in the status report. Since for morbidity and mortality data most recent figures have to be considered so the WHO report ‘Prevalence of mental disorders’ will be most suitable’. The article is a very good source to present an overview of the mental health of people in Europe. The source is selected because it was providing relevant data on the prevalence of mental diseases and Alzheimer in different parts of Europe. The source is credible and the published information is most recent and reliable.
‘Policies and practices for mental health in Europe’ focuses on different policies and strategies that are practiced in Europe governed by government and non-governmentorganizations. This report will be used in the introduction part also while discussing the therapeutic interventions available for the treatment of mental disorders particularly Alzheimer in Europe. The report also highlighted information gaps in the field of mental health and identify the areas on improvement that will be used in the status report in the recommendations section. The report will also be used in indicating the economic burden on Europe due to the prevailing mental health disorders. The status report will alsouse the suggested improvements in polices and strategies in the fact sheet as a part of status report. The fact sheet will also be used to indicate the challenges in controlling the mental health disorders including Alzheimer disease. The source is selected because it will be helpful in analyzing the disease state in different countries of Europe; secondly the percentages and facts revealed in the report are factual as WHO is a very reliable source of data collection.
An article titled ‘Health in the EU under the microscope’ was selected by using Eurostat Statistics Database. It contained information on life style and prevalence of Alzheimer in different parts of Europe. The article will be useful to present an overview of health status in Europe (Eurostat, 2004). Some statistics related to Alzheimer will be incorporated in the Alzheimer status report for supporting the data. The report is selected because of its data credibility as EuroStat publishes it. It will increase the validity of the research included in the status report.
For discussing the history, causes, pathology and diagnosis a primary source“Alzheimer's Disease: A Status Report for 2002” bywill be used. This report gives a detailed account on the leading causes of Alzheimer’s disease. In the introduction part using this report will identify the disease characteristics. The background and history will also be formatted using this report. For the later sections of status report including diagnosis, possible causes and pathology this report will be used to extract information. The social, economical and environmental factors resulting in increasing prevalence of Alzheimer will also be incorporated in the status report by using this report. This source is selected because it presents very detailed analysis on causes, diagnosis and background of the disease. The information is found to be very accurate and comprehensive.
The treatment of Alzheimer disease makes a very important and big section in the status report. Two journal articles were selected by using Ebscohost academic database. The articles covered the pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment options of Alzheimer separately.Ballard etal. (2011) presented detailed account on Nonpharmacological Treatment of Alzheimer Disease in which different treatment options were discussed including cognitive training, brain training games, cognitive rehabilitation and Memory. The article caught the attention because it is written precisely and clearly addressing all the non-pharmacological treatment options. The pharmacological treatment of Alzheimer is included in the status report by using the other article ‘Pharmacological Treatment of Alzheimer Disease’ by FadiMassoud (2011). The article is selected because it presents a comparison of pharmacological treatments available and practiced for treating Alzheimer. In the pharmacological treatments the researcher has discussed all the pharmaceutical agents used for the therapy of Alzheimer.
For further comparison and new advancements in the medicinal agents and technology another article will be used to include the Pharmacodynamic, Pharmacokinetic and Pharmacogenetic Aspects of Drugs Used in the Treatment of Alzheimer's Disease. This article expresses more detail on pharmacological parameters that will be used in the status report to increase the clinical significance o f the data incorporated in the report. The data will help in using the report for further research on Alzheimer. The article expresses all the pharmacokinetics parameters in the form of tables that will be included in the status report.
