Computer science is a major that involves the study of computers, their software and how computers can be used to solve problems. Students of computer science would be involved in tasks such as designing software and using this computer software to provide redress to fundamental issues. As a database administrator skills such as attention to detail, excellent communication skills, being honest, a good planner, and good team players just to mention a few will be essential. Database administrators are tasked with performing integrity and security issues of the database (Mullins 2012). Database administrators also plan and conceptualize future ideas. Here students should learn tasks such as creating backup for data systems and designing future data programs and projects.
As a database administrator student, they should also expect to be involved in planning and development of databases. This will include tasks such as troubleshooting any issues on behalf of users. Database administrators are usually tasked with complex administrative tasks involving several steps (Pablo 2010). Therefore, the first essential skill the student shall be required to have alertness all the time and be a good decision makers at the same time. One way they could do this is check and double check their work. With the experience, they will find away to watch out for details. Secondly, the students should be good problem solvers. Most of the tasks required of them will be needing solutions. Assertiveness is another important skill required from students studying to become database administrators. Assertiveness just means being able to communicate their views and opinions with confidence. They should not expect to be right very time. Most times their ideas will be subject to challenges. Therefore, being calm and being firm at the same time is an added advantage. Being tactful is another useful skill of a database administrator. The computer science students should be able to understand their role; this will help them in maintaining objectivity in their operation.
The nature of the work of database administrators requires students looking to venture into this career need to be innovative and creative. Problems that will be presented to them will mostly require programming solutions or programming approach. They should, therefore, be able to think outside the box and provide the solutions when they are needed. In line with this they need to be quick thinkers. Database administration is no place for slow thinkers. Planning is another skill required of the database administrator. The administrators will be required to plan future projects and designs and perform tasks such as implementation and creation of future backup plans. Therefore, they need creativity in order to successes. Another skill they need is that they should be able to communicate their views without fear and in a calm way. They should also be good at managing relationships. They will require good communication skills to manage all the interactions they are involved in (Gruba and Søndergaard 2001). As database administrators, they should possess good decision-making skills. When under pressure they should be able to make right decisions. Database administrator should also be humble and should be able to teach rather than preach.
In order to develop communication skills, administrators should be kind to share their knowledge with all those who wish to learn. They can do this by tweeting, blogging and being excellent mentors. Database management will be a good career path for students who can have a focused mind. They can do this by having wide thinking and choosing their priorities right. In normal circumstances, a database administrator is considered an expert in the computer science field and is usually consulted on various aspects. They can enhance their business skills by being approachable. No matter the circumstances they should learn to make time for their clients providing them with guidance and support.
As students study, they need to lay a good foundation for themselves by knowing the roles database administrators play in an organization. They should be able to understand that as database administrators they are in charge of important databases that originate from different platforms and environment. They would, therefore, need to be active team players since they will be working with other people. Attention to detail is critical for database administrators because they build complex and very fragile databases. Computer science is a dynamic field that requires consistent skill development. Students pursuing a career in the field need should be flexible and continuously develop their skills so that they are competitive and sought after in the industry. Students need to be good communicators since most of the time they will be called upon to pass information to others. Such information needs to be sure and definite. Database administrators communicate to users who need to be assisted. Students need to learn to understand their audience as well as understand tasks related to the job.
