Apple products are said to be the most innovative and have the best design on the market. One of the founders and the visionaries of the company, Steve Jobs, led Apple’s products with a focus on design and meaning driven innovation strategies to sell products to the end user (1,2). The design process and his influence was first established with the groundbreaking Macintosh (1-4) then later with the iMac, the iPod, the Iphone, Macbook and finally the Ipad. Jobs worked directly with his design team which was an unusual area for a CEO to be taking part (1,2). Although people thought the product line would fade with Steve Jobs’ departure, the legacy of design at its core lives on and Apple is further designing new objects like the Apple watch and Apple car. Although they may innovate better than anyone Apple does not invent. They actually wait for other companies to move first before taking their technology innovating and designing products to take the lion’s share (6). For example: the graphic user interface was taken from Xerox computer system and utilized in the Macintosh (3), music players that used MP3 compression system were already on the market several years before the ipod (6), tablet computers arrived years before the iPad (6), and the Pebble predated the Apple watch by several years and sold a million units before the Apple watch came out (7). With all the products Apple has produced it has established its brand in the eyes of consumers and is the most valuable in the world today (8,9). Apple promotes its brand everywhere through free product placements (10). Apple has influenced many companies like Samsung to start designing more aesthetic looking products than before (11). However, other companies may be making products only based on technology or market driven design rather than design and meaning driven innovation with the customers in mind (12). Companies can be stronger if they use design driven innovation at their core strategy.
