According to the New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, Islamic fundamentalists tend to fight against the invasion of common and westernizing impacts on Islam, and seek to establish Islamic law; including strict codes of conduct. They also tend to target political debasement in Muslim countries. Modernism, as illustrated in the study of the contribution of Sir Sayyid and Muhammad Igbal by Tauseef Ahmad Parrayis, is a new development to accommodate Islamic confidence with current values. These values include vote based systems, patriotism, rights, levelheadedness, science, correspondence and advancement. This paper seeks to compare and contrast the positions of modernist and fundamentalist discourses of Islam.
According to Hojjatoleslam Hassan Yousefi Eshkevari’s lecture on Islamic fundamentalism and Islamic modernism, Muslims have been known to be non-political, in a passive state of lassitude, resignation and indifference for many years. Fundamentalists were oblivious in regards to the contemporary improvement of the world. They viewed contemporary improvements of the world as political moves aimed to corrupt Islam, and that were against the standards of religion, uprightness and morals. The present day Islamist seeks to remake religious statutes and reflections, and does not resign to authentic and customary sciences imposed on the present age.
Eshkevari goes on to illustrate the differentiating factors between fundamentalists and modernists. Fundamentalism tends to be biased towards religious formalism, and it keeps up with the idea that it ought to give sincere and concrete appearance to religious considerations. Modernism, on the other hand, offers freedom to religion and rejects religious formalism. Modernists affirm that a person is entitled to human rights even if their ideas may be varied from the rest while fundamentalism is of the view that only an individual with settled conclusion has human rights. Variations in religious views notwithstanding, every individual is at liberty to choose their line of believe; provided that the choices do not infringe on the rights and freedoms of others.
