Why internet censorship in UAE is bad?
Undoubtedly internet censorship in UAE is a very debatable topic. There are several reasons why internet censorship is actually bad. It is known that what is prohibited evokes more desire to eventually do so and access the content prohibited. The censorship of the internet in UAE facilitates and makes the leader a sole decision maker of the country who does not have a need to consult anyone when making decisions which are eventually final and unquestioned. Wang C. (2003, p 219) claims that “It is understood that for many people, organizations, communities and governments, sexual expositions are offensive..intolerable” but living in 21st century having an only one person who decides the country’s path is not that popular anymore and it is the internet censorship that assists in this situation. Citizens just do not have any access to the worldwide independent sources but only to those that are accepted by the leader who literally decides what they should have the access to. Eventually this fact means that people do not have a media and speech freedom because everything is controlled over the government. Riel B. states that “The UAE has a group-oriented culture, with much of the focus falling on family and religion”. Thus it is clear that the UAE is an Islamic country but there is also a small percentage of people who are Christians. Because there is an internet censorship, which is applied due to mostly religious reasons, it can be assumed that people of other religious are discriminated. No matter which religion a person has one should follow Islamic rules hence do not have the access to all content available on the internet. Therefore the rights of other religions and cultures are infringed which goes against the rights of people. Although the internet censorship is meant to protect its users but mature adults can control themselves and therefore do not need any kind of restriction. Also, censorship only makes people more interested, curious and attracted by what is forbidden. People have the right to know what is happening in the world and it is impossible to do with internet censorship. Of course it is more a matter of religion because UAE is a very Islamic country but people of other religion should not follow the Islamic rules and should have more freedom concerned the access to the internet.
