Blood Test Results, Findings, and Interpretations
Based on the blood test results and findings, the pattern of deviance from normal findings in Frank’s case may indicate that he has a bone disease. Hormonal imbalance in this case, is the strongest and most reliable factor within the context of blood testing procedure that can be relied on. Results in the procedure shows that he has elevated blood serum calcium and PTH levels; and lowered calcitonin levels. The most possible conditions that exhibit these manifestations are osteopenia and osteoporosis. Osteopenia is simply a milder form of osteoporosis.
The pattern of deviation in Frank’s laboratory findings are consistent with the bone conditions osteoporosis or if not, osteopenia. These two bone conditions have something in common and that is the heightened levels of calcium in the blood and of parathyroid hormones, and lowered levels of calcitonin in the system. The main function of the hormone calcitonin is to lower blood calcium levels by depositing them inside the long bones, making them stronger in the process; the function of the hormone PTH, on the other hand is the opposite, which is to break down the calcium in the bones and release them into the bloodstream, thereby making the calcium levels in the blood higher and that of in the bones lower. This is, exactly what is happening in Frank’s current condition. Because he has high PTH levels and low Calcitonin levels, his bones’ mass is slowly decreasing and his blood serum calcium levels keeps on increasing as a result of the calcium getting out of the bones.
