As the child of an airline pilot father and a flight attendant Mom, I have been extremely fortunate to have numerous opportunities to take advantage of my inherent travel bug, and to experience a wide range of different places and cultures, allowing me to communicate with others in diverse ways.
Also, as I have grown up, the methods of communication have continually expanded with new technologies, making it even easier to keep in constant contact with others, and to conduct more and more business communications without the need to meet face-to-face. Video conferencing is one such example. Numbers of people – maybe from different organizations and even in different countries – can hold a “meeting” without leaving their own desks. Although the technique requires increased discipline to avoid everyone talking at once, the great advantage of the technology is in the potentially huge savings in travel time and costs. Communications is a truly exciting field of technology with an even more exciting future, and is the one in which I intend to major and from there to build a successful career.
I have spent the last year at Palomar Community College, studying hard, so that I will have completed the appropriate courses and achieved the grades needed to qualify me for transfer onto a PhD program in Communications. I firmly believe that my natural interest in Communications and the upcoming developments in the technology will make for a rewarding future career that will be at the cutting edge of technological development and will enhance our lives.
I am a keen and ambitious tennis player and have long aspired to play college tennis. During the past year, any free time I have had when not studying and at weekends, I have made efforts to perfect my game by practicing every day and playing in any available tournaments. I am actively interested in other sports, too and consider myself an excellent team player – both in sports and in my academic and business life.
I believe I possess attributes that set me apart from others, including an insatiable desire for ongoing learning, and a compulsive work ethic that makes me strive to complete tasks well and in a timely manner. I believe those character traits stem from being raised in a family that lives according to the ideal that hard work brings its own rewards. I appreciate the inherent value of hard work and of paying my way in the world. I also feel the need to encourage and advise others that a good education is invaluable for future success.
I consider myself fortunate to be in a position to continue my higher education, knowing that a disparity of educational opportunity is one of the key challenges faced by my generation. And that disparity is not just between different countries, but also here in the US. Families in poor communities have to send their children to schools lacking good facilities and having overcrowded classrooms, and unable to attract better teachers. That situation affects the outcomes of even the cleverest students.
If a better and more even standard of education was available everywhere, more school leavers would get better jobs, lowering crime rates and making society safer. I know that a college education has already widened my perspective on life. I push myself to accomplish my self-imposed goals because I am ambitious, but I also believe that each of us also has a moral duty to give some time for people who have the greatest need; i.e. by doing voluntary work in the community. Thank you for your time and consideration.
