Empowering students with knowledge is the most satisfying and humbling experience for an educator. Being a Mathematics teacher I am elated to see my students perform beyond my expectations; by applying the concepts taught to them. I believe that a teacher should keep learning and enhancing his knowledge to impart the best to his/her pupils. As a mathematics teacher for Grade 5 to 8, I have experimented on teaching methodologies for quick and strong grasping power. It is at this stage that students learn to apply concepts in practical terms. While working with KIPP MP Middle Charter School, Brooklyn I had the opportunity of designing the curriculum for students considering the student calibre and school expectations; I effectively utilized data analysis technique to formulate a regular assessment plan. I coordinated with the parents and school authorities to enhance the performance of the students. Frequent home visits also helped in understanding the students better. A tour to the grocery stores was organized and the students were divided into groups; were given a fixed budget within which they had to make purchase. The team that shopped effectively was declared the winner. The students enjoyed the practical experience of using mathematics and learned to work as a team.
Hard work, persistence and dedication have kept me going; I believe that these are the prerequisites to success. A self-motivated teacher can raise the performance level of the entire class; I have followed that skill based learning is the best way to grasp and apply concepts. As a proactive and successful educator I consider that a combination of multiple teaching methods along with active student participation is very encouraging. My past work experience with different schools has increased my competency and calibre. Networking is a virtue that ensures success and positive results; I collaborated with the students, their families, peers and the principal to analyse student potential and then worked on it. Continuous learning and experimentation is essential in today’s changing academic environment; I have utilized my experiences as a student worker, teacher, student and academician to evolve as a motivating, committed and enthusiastic person.
Being an educator is being a part of the change that leads to innovations for a better life. The success of a teacher is analysed by the growth of his students; I am fortunate to see my students excel in life.
