Good Critical Thinking About Demographic Transition And Crude Rates

The total population of developed countries is higher at the end of the demographic transition despite the lower crude birth and death rates specifically because of the trends that are predictable within the transitional model. Improvements in social conditions that go along with the industrialization of society during the second phase of the transition lead to enormous population growth in this period. Food supplies are more plentiful and sanitation is optimized, thereby dropping the death rates because of longer life spans and more effective medical practices. During this phase, there is no corresponding fall in birth rates.
When the birth rate begins to decline, in phase three of the transition, the population is growing more slowly than it was during phase two, but it is still continuing to increase at a rate that is inversely proportionate to the decline in the crude birth rate. The death rate has dropped much faster than the birth rate. More children are surviving and families do not need to bear as many in order to continue to thrive. Furthermore, the social changes, like the education of women, availability of effective birth control and urbanization of communities, have an impact on attitudes about children, motherhood and family life. The cost to raise kids in a more developed society is higher than in the early stages when the main expenses were food costs. In phase three there is an emphasis on educating and entertaining, and expenditures include clothing, toys, books and transportation.
Since more children are surviving at this point, the age distribution begins to shift. The larger younger generation is going to grow to maturity and then eventually reproduce as well. The birth rate levels off, but by this time there have been permanent effects from the population growth explosion witnessed in stage two. As long as every person continues to have a child, to replace themselves, the population will remain larger than what was originally found in the area.
