The Stage of Change Model Currently Experienced by Josephine
The six stages in the change model that are associated with personal development are: Pre-contemplation; contemplation; determination; action; maintenance and termination respectively (psychcentral.com). However, in the case of Josephine, it appears that she is as at the determination stage. In this stage, individuals are usually committed to make certain actions or make initiatives (psychcentral.com). For instance an alcoholic person may make a decision to stop drinking and take the necessary steps. In the case of Josephine, she has made her mind that she has to keep fit and lose weight. This is indicated by actions that involve running 2-3 miles in case she consumes fried junk food. She also indicates that if she does not run, she induces vomiting; however, most of the food does not come out. She also indicates that in some cases, she does not take dinner if she has a salsa class the following day or even consume one meal per day.
How to Establish a Rapport with Josephine in her Situation
Taking into consideration the fact that Josephine is determined to reduce her body weight or maintain the current weight, it is important to develop a proper relationship with her in order to facilitate the counseling process. This will begin by trying to determine her daily routines, diet and her feelings towards her eating habits. It will be followed by slowly inducing facts about the consequences of her eating habit by providing examples of cases, where people with similar eating habits have faced health challenges. Consequently, Josephine will be induced to a healthy diet that does not affect her career and personal perception in relation to weight.
Counseling Skills that I would use in the case of Josephine
One of the counseling skills that I would apply in the case of Josephine is listening. This would involve ensuring that Josephine has my full attention in order to understand her point of view and suggestions regarding her problem. The other counseling skill I would apply in this case is counselor self-disclosure. This is a skill that basically entails sharing a counselor’s personal opinions and experiences related to the problem at hand with the client (Rose, 2012). Consequently, I will apply information provision and removal of obstacles to change. This skill involves provision of data, facts and other pertinent resources to support a counselor’s opinions and suggestions (Rose, 2012).
Two Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Techniques that I would use in the case of Josephine
Cognitive behavioral therapy entails the application of various techniques to assist counselors solve their clients’ cognitive/mental challenges. In Josephine’s situation, I would apply behavioral techniques; that is, the application of techniques that focus on behavior modification (Rose, 2012). I would also apply support techniques that basically focus on providing guidance and support to Josephine in case she faces challenges as she attempts to modify her eating habits.
How to Educate Josephine on Normal and Excessive Exercising
After evaluating Josephine’s exercise activities, I would available secondary and primary sources of information to determine if her exercise is normal or excess. This will be followed by provision of a guideline on how she should exercise normally as well as actions that she should not undertake to avoid excess exercise.
