Good Eating Disorders Across The World Essay Example

The Western beauty standard considers extreme thinness as ideal for all models regardless of cultural backgrounds. This practice has led to greater body dissatisfaction, people changing their eating habits leading to more eating disorders in nations all over the world. It is not right because those who do not have such like bodies develop a sense of self-dissatisfaction and adopt disordered eating behavior increasing cases of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.
The media are responsible for the increase in eating disorders. It can be attributed to the programs they beam especially on fashions and eating habits. Most people are influenced by what they see and start mimicking the lifestyles and eating habits of those they watch in order resemble the “ideal” figures. After watching such programs viewers start having negative feelings about their body sizes and shapes and, therefore, try to adapt to what they watch or is broadcasted to them. Those who watch television are always more so affected and start feeling too big or fat. They thus try some crude means of controlling their weights like to vomiting, in turn it affects their bodies and health negatively and often succumbing to eating-disorder related illnesses and health complications.
For this situation to change, the media need to educate people more on the ways proven to be right for weight control and also emphasize on the negative effects of the different eating habits that they chose to adopt. They should try to bring out a sense of self appreciation among people of both gender and discourage the ideal “muscular, strong and broad shoulders” for men and the ideal “thin, slim and slightly underweight bodies”. Such sensitization will change people’s minds of trying to look “ideal” and try care more for their healthy living.
