Nelson Mandela once said that education is one of the most powerful weapons a person could use to change the world. It is true that if one is to adapt themselves very well in the world then a certain amount of education is needed in order to do this. However, when one speaks of education, an individual may think of formal education where he can enter an educational institution and be taught by a professional trained to do this. Nevertheless, informal education is necessary is still a valid means of receiving the necessary skills to operate and be successful in life. This can be contrasted with receiving no education in any form whatsoever which will prevent a person from fully participating in the Information Age. Therefore, it can be argued that although a person who has not been educated is still able to function in life by using their native intelligence and their wits, education is necessary if one needs to be successful in life because formal education is necessary in order to access, decipher, and understand certain types of information and formal education is necessary if one needs to acquire the knowledge and skill sets necessary to be employed in high level positions.
Firstly, formal education is necessary to be successful in life because it provides one with the necessary knowledge and skill sets to participate in the Information Age. For instance, if someone does not know how to read that person will be unable to communicate with other persons using Web 2.0 technologies, such as social media sites, chat rooms, in-text messages and blogging. However, one might argue that it is not necessary for someone to engage with others using Web 2.0 technologies and education is not necessary to teach these skill sets. Nevertheless, in order to be successful in life an individual needs to know how to communicate in the same manner that other persons are communicating. Education will help to facilitate the learning and understanding of these technologies, and will enable a person to effectively communicate using these technologies. When someone knows to effective communicate their message in a relevant, cutting-edge manner then that person is able to be successful in life.
Secondly, education will allow one to become successful in life because it will enable one to access, decipher, and understand specific types of information. For instance, if someone is uneducated in understanding how to calculate the length of the hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle using the Pythagoras Theorem, then that person will be unable to solve mathematical problems related to design or construction, for instance. Nevertheless, one needs not to learn about mathematical equations to solve problems related to design or construction, if that person’s interests have nothing to do with those endeavours. However, knowledge of mathematics is still needed to do basic calculations, such as balancing a check book and calculating groceries that need to be bought at a grocery store. It is a formal education which teaches persons numerals and how to use these numerals. This use and understanding of these numerals will enable a person to access certain types of information that are inaccessible to someone who has not been educated to use numbers in such a manner.
Finally, a good education ensures that one acquires the knowledge and skill sets necessary to be employed at high level positions in various industries. For example, high level positions require that persons have a certain level of academic qualifications in order to understand the concepts, ideologies, terminologies and jargons used to operate and be successful in fulfilling these roles and responsibilities. On the other hand, one might argue that a person’s native intelligence and wits are enough to be functional in life, and there are persons who are functionally illiterate and innumerate. These persons can even be employed in very low-skilled jobs. However, in order to be successful in life and to be paid well, employers require a certain level of knowledge and skill sets which can solve complex problems in a short period of time. It will take a solid, formal education to have the ability to do this.
