WHY I WANT TO TAKE DANCE CLASS

I have been watching dance performances on TV and, occasionally live, and I have grown to love dance as an art medium. When I was about seven, I was asked to be in a small local dance performance, and I had a wonderful time! I have not had much dance experience as an adult, but I have great enthusiasm for learning about dance, all aspects of it: history, choreography, dance music, dance performance of all kinds. I want to teach my body to move rhythmically in ways that it is not accustomed to moving, and to become really proficient, flexible, and graceful along the way.
Everything about dance is interesting to me. I know that its history and evolution as an art form are complex and have involved many talented choreographers, music, and acting instructors (like Stanislavsky), and I want to learn all about the history of the many forms of dance, both American and non-American.
As a dancer, I want to become proficient in many forms of dance: ballet, modern, jazz, African, and other forms of ethnic dance. I also want to learn what goes on behind the scenes in mounting dance performances: costume, lighting, stage design and more. I want to learn about choreography and be capable of actually doing choreography myself—a dream that is hard to imagine, but achievable, I am sure. I’d also like to learn where dance fits into the culture as an important art-form that has been changing and growing throughout the centuries.

The phrase from the course description: “Distinguish between dance as performance art and

theater and dance as social experience or individual expression,” really appeals to me and intrigues me. I know that there is a great deal that I could learn in this class, and I am eager!
