Currently, the world is one that has shaped and molded by the mass media. Mass communication is the primary means by which the societies relay information, news and entertainment to the public. The advancement of mass communications firms has fueled by a parallel advancement of technology (Hallahan, 1997, p.10). Advancement in technology has promoted instantaneous, worldwide, and persistent presentation of mass communications ideas and images, both negative and positive (McQuail, 1977, p.14). Human communication history and the development of human speech is reviewed as one of the defining characteristics of the transition to human civilization. Applications of pictures and writing allowed communication in moving beyond the face-to-face requirements of direct speech. This has made mass communications to be more than a source of entertainment and information, globally. The paper will noticeably elucidate how mass communications have accelerated the process of globalization by giving it a new transformed aspect. The primary sources of information are television, radio, newspapers, and the internet for people all around the world.
One of the outstanding aspects of modern society is the rapid growth of the information technology that has been applied in distinct areas of electronic activities with significant implications (McQuail, 1977, p.11). Transformation in technology has allowed simultaneous editions of newspapers to be published from every part of the world. Radio has increasingly specialized with thematic and sub-thematic stations. Mass communications have a sound effects when it comes to matters of globalization. The rate of acceleration is high which corresponding to speed of technology. Despite f long history of mass communications, the firms have been able to spread rapidly and contribute revolutionary changes in the medium of communication globally.
The first impact of mass communications impact on socio-culture life globally (McQuail, 1977, p.19). From the newspapers to internet, magazines and news, social culture is mirrored by mass communications. Mass communications reflect social culture, both positive and negative in a different form. In newspaper industry, the topics seek attention; therefore they can turn heads. Most of the newspapers news focuses on never-ending cultural changes. Mostly they concentrate on a good deed or positive impact that are made by social culture (McQuail, 1977, p.13). For instance, education, way of living or culture food and heritage. However, the news may turn heads on the negative side to activities such as sexting that may impress an adverse influence on the society.
Culture is replicated in a clouded way that can distort it to the masses. In broadcast media, advertising is not common but certainly reflects on social culture (Hallahan, 1997, p.23). The ads use people to portray what they wear, and they eat which commonly portray socio-culture. As the technology makes further inroads into education curriculums, company such as iPad has already built private school classrooms. The class creates room for education authorities to communicate instantly with the pupils, teachers, and parents. This becomes an absolute benefit in terms of increasing the efficiency and efficacy of education. Despite mass communication being house of entertainment, the firms have portrayed a significance role in facilitating educations. By using the internet, one can attend class and have advantages over the others.
Mass communication has made online education effective and essay for the students. The online courses have a variety of programs, have lower costs, and create more comfortable learning environment, convenience, and flexibility (McQuail, 1977, p.18). This has made education to reach or the corners of the world. This has created an urgent need for the mass communication and education authorities to join in improving world’s education. On educative factor, the mass media facilitate community education and youth abuse presentation strategies. The mass media play a significant role in improving one’s attitudes and behavior. This is to increase community awareness of issues that may affect the society.
Media is known for creating awareness of drugs abuse through their adverts, programs and reality show. The programs turn heads to be of educative advantages to the youth who are vulnerable in when it comes to matters of drug abuse. Media impacts and practice of using media constructively has become an essential tool of advocating the youths and their families. Mass communication has portrayed a significant role in democracies. This is an effect that is more than entertaining since it educate people about their country background, political aspects, and emerging issues in politics globally (Hallahan, 1997, p.81). Current societies could not be imagined without mass communication. The main problems related to mass media is the how media cover their politics news. Sometimes they tend to bias and favor one side by looking for their opinions.
In conclusion, mass communication has brought people closer and has developed mutual understanding of the event or issue. People are not only dependent on mass communication for entertainment, information, and politics but also science, education, religion, agriculture, charities, and transportation. Mass communication is significant for socialization of people since it changes in subtle areas. For instance, socialization of the individual in regard to attitudes, knowledge and beliefs, can be aired through mass communication by using the media such as television and cinema. Therefore, mass communication contributes an essential role in the communication of perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs. Mass media like television, newspapers, and radio are persuasive force when the same ideas or behavior, happen dependably from program to program and presented in a categorized manner.
