Discussion 1 - Week 8 Your Data Interpretation Practicum

Introduction

This study discusses he findings of an analysis that was conducted on a data set containing 122 variables of 1978 Automobile data. The study considers both quantitative and qualitative data and its objective is to determine if there exists a difference between the price of cars produced in the United States and those produced outside the United States.

The analysis of the data indicate that the price of cars produced in the United States is 6072.42 dollars compared to 6384.68 dollars for foreign cars. Although a difference exists in the price of the cars a parametric test needs to be conducted in order to determine if this difference is statistically significant (Boslaugh, 2008). The test is insignificant p-value = 0.66 and therefore we favor the alternative hypothesis over the null hypothesis. The test concludes that there is no statistical difference between the prices of United States cars and foreign made cars.
A regression analysis was conducted to quantify the relationship between price and millage. The R2 =0.47 which indicates that the 47% of the variance of the outcome variable price can be predicted by the variance of the predictor variable millage. All the tests in the study were conducted at 0.05 significance level (Pearson Education, 2010).

Limitations

The limitations of the study include its inability to comprehensively detail the research methods used in the data collection criteria. No indication is given of how the sample was selected and the sampling technique employed whether random sampling or non-random sampling. The findings also rely on data which was extracted from consumer reports and there is a likelihood that the data may be exaggerated. Furthermore, the researcher does not know the attention that was accorded that completion of the consumer reports (Groove, 2007).
