Google is a multicorporation based in America. Google was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 1995 when they were PHD students. Currently they own around 14% of its shares, but has control of over 56% voting power of stocks. Google is considered to be the world’s first accepted search engine. Google was made private limited company in 1998. In 2004 an initial public offering was done to make it public limited company. The Mission statement of Google since the beginning is to arrange the information in the world and make it available for everyone universally in an acceptable and useful manner. In 2004 the headquarter of the company was moved to California city Mountain View and was named as the Googleplex. (Agam, 2005) The current main business model for all the search engines is advertising and Google has been ranked as number one in the search engines. It has become synonymous with the web search and now people say “Google” it rather than “search” for the information.
Analyse the type of people that work at Google with respect to the business culture of the organization. Identify 1-2 qualities that define a leader at Google and typical background of Google employee.
The organizational culture maintained at Google is based on giving importance and freedom to employees as they provide enough space for the employees to make their own decision and innovate. With freedom and room for creativity, a lot of respect is given to employees who have the technical expertise, have good creative ideas and have skillful problem solving skills rather than the focus on designations and the formal line of authority. The employees are allowed to recommend changes within the organization, but they need to provide a compelling reason for change (Robbins, 2006).
The leadership at Google is based on the believe that if the employees are given appropriate tools they will definitely make a difference and will deliver. One of the most important qualities of a leader at Google is that they follow the democratic style of leadership. The second quality of a leader at Google is that they encourage autonomy and creative ideas. A typical background of Google employee is that they have a wide variety of skill set that is the first requirement of job at Google. Google looks for smart and hardworking employee (Robbins, 2006).
Identify two (2) examples of services or amenities that Google provides to its employees, interns, partners, and visitors. Next, examine two to three (2-3) ways in which such free services and amenities create an organizational culture that fosters creativity and innovation.
TGIF – Company-wide gets together
This is a weekly get together that takes place throughout the company which was started by co-founders of Google. This get together is used to welcome new employees that have joined the company and the top managers present the latest news related Google or its activities to its employees. Weekly events are discussed as well, but the mainstream agenda of this get together is the question and answer session. The main purpose of this session is that employees should feel extremely comfortable asking any question from even the top most manager of the organization and it is expected from the top executives that they will freely answer the queries and discuss the issue with employees as openly as possible (Shipman, 2006).
Google Ideas
At Google, preference is given to ideas and discussions. Employees have the freedom to project their ideas openly regarding product improvements and developments. A popular concept at Google is Google Ideas website where the employees can regularly propose their ideas and concepts regarding product improvement or development. The discussion can also include how things can be further improvised within Google (Shipman, 2006). An essential part of this discussion is not that employees have a say in the company, but the topics if considered important are monitored very closely by the top management. If the Googlers think it is important that the topic should be given further consideration, it is further brought under discussion at TGIF (Shipman, 2006).
Discuss Google’s organizational culture, and determine whether or not you would prefer to work in this type of the environment. Indicate whether or not Google’s company culture would help you to perform your tasks with a greater degree of creativity and innovation. Provide a rationale for e is your response.
Google’s culture is democratic and casual in nature with a flat organizational structure where the top management is hands on and there is no large middle management and teams are made up of members that have equal authority. The culture encourages creativity and innovation and yes, this culture will help me to perform my tasks with a greater level of creativity because at Google the concept of failure is accepted and it is widely accepted phenomenon that if you haven’t failed you haven’t achieved enough. This means that the organizational culture encourages that risk should be taken and the traditional concepts can be challenged with rationale to change (Robbins, 2006).
