The second King of Israel was David son of Jesse. When Saul failed to please God, Samuel was instructed by God to go to the House of Jesse to anoint the new King of Israel. Jesse, being a human brought forth all his grown up children before Samuel, but none was the chosen. The Samuel asked Jesses whether those were all his children. Jesse said there is the youngest, tending to sheep, Samuel instructed Jesse that David be brought. When David arrived he was ruddy, with beautiful countenance and good looks, and the lord instructed Samuel to anoint him (1 Samuel 16: 11-13).
David was known as a strong fighter known in the history of the Israel. He killed Goliath from Gath the strongest of all the Israel’s enemies and brought an amazing victory to the people. When he killed Goliath, the people sung in the streets “Saul has slain his thousands and David his tens of thousands” (1 Samuel 18: 6) something that did not go well with Saul. David conquered the city of Jerusalem and drove away the Philistines and brought back the Ark of Covenant to Jerusalem. In addition, he eliminated competition from the surrounding regional reducing the powers of the Philistine’s, Moabites, Amalekites, etc. He was the king who united the North and the South into a single Kingdom.
David was described as a man after God’s Heart. Such a description is in order for various reasons. First, David was a very humble man for his beginning who called upon the Lord when faced with challenges. David trusted the lord and repented oftenly unlike other Kings. He was loving, devoted, and revered the lord acted in total faith in God.
