The choices, actions, aims and goals of human being are highly influenced by morality since time immemorial. Morality forms the based for the strong beliefs of right and wrong. According to Walker et al., morality is referred as the voluntary actions that have social and interpersonal implications and that are governed by intrapsychic mechanism (cognitive and/or emotive) (372). Thus morality can be identified as a social enterprise, origin wise and function wise. Morality prescribes peoples’ activities, regulates social interactions and arbitrates conflicts. Interplay of behavior, thought and emotion is entailed in the intrapsychic issues of morality. Morality is rarely expressed without a cognitive content. Thoughts always have some emotional tone, though involuntary behaviors don’t have intentional basis.
Each individual has his own sense of morality or moral compass. But none is born with a moral status by birth. Charlotte Mason’s words as summarised by Laurio, emphasises that everyone is born with a conscience but none is born with thoughts of morality. Children are not born with moral understanding of what is good or bad. Instead they might have odd ideas about good and bad. As children every one is motivate to think and act good by examples (57-102).We learn morals from what we see and experience around us. They help us to lead a social life without chaos. Each culture has evolved definite set of morals which may be different from other cultures. These morals are a learned response and which are followed by the individuals through environmental conditioning. Morality of individuals can vary based on the conditions of their upbringing and experiences they collect since childhood. In short, the different forces of family and society shape the morality of children who would express it once they become adults. Like all other individuals, my personal views of morality, of right and wrong are largely dependent on the concrete imperatives of morality taught to me and those I have experienced since my childhood from the family, school and society.
