Mugged is a story by Jim Crockett that focuses on the author’s relationship with his coffee mug. The relationship as illustrated a normal routine in the author’s life. It reveals much about our general attachment to small behaviors despite being small in scope and size but yet creating much meaning and familiarity. The author commits much of the narration to accentuate how much he adores and takes care of the mug. He admits it’s a one-sided relationship but nevertheless he believes that he derives much joy in handling the mug. The nature of the relationship he accentuates is symbolic and runs deep than what others may perceive it to be.
The benefits derived from the mug keeps the author much attached. The secure lid, the insulation and the environmental friendly nature of the mug has made the author incorporate it into his daily routine. The ritual that is associated with the mug at times puts the author in conflict with other. He at times stops in traffic to pick the mug after falling into a gutter. A fact that espouses how much our rituals may offend others that do not fully appreciate or comprehend them.
The rituals also become part of our identity if unchecked. This is well illustrated by the author’s concern about how people associate the mug with him. He fears that this might be a type of neurosis that might be detrimental to him. It does not deter him at all, a fact that many of us ought to appreciate about our misunderstood rituals. Our rituals are what make us human and at home in our own skins. The rituals ground us and help us accept our uniqueness as well as our social identities that emanate from them.
