Prior to the introduction of Information Technology and industrial revolution, the family was the basic producer and sustainer of the economy. According to Braverman’s analysis, the family was dependent on its members to provide all required end products required for the smooth continuity of daily lives. Materials obtained from shops or farms were in their rawest form. They did not undergo any process of manufacture or processing. The manipulation of these materials to meet the needs of an individual was done in homes. For example, clothes were hardly bought from shops but a woman would buy thread and sew up the clothes she requires at her house.
However, Industrial market emerged as a result of the industrial revolution. The market led to a shift of dependency from family and individual roles to dependency on industrial products. The universal market emerged as people became busier, as they were unable to carry out basic chores at their homes. Universal market introduced ways of having machines and other equipment do the work that humans were initially doing.
The industrial market can be argued to have been as a result of the developments discussed by Banerjee. The emergence of technology led to more working hours and less time for leisure. The leisure time that has been taken up by new opportunities presented by technology is what individuals used to use to make homemade products. Therefore, viewing Braverman’s article with Banerjee’s assessment makes it easier to understand the reason behind the emergence of the universal market.
Manual labor is likely to be replaced entirely as Information Technology develops. IT comes up with inventions that replace manual labor or reduce the number of manual laborers by inventing more efficient machinery to do the job. With time, I think that the working opportunities that will be available to people will be managerial. Employees will be required to run machines and issue commands that guide the machines in their operations. Machines work 24 hours every day without a break. Those employed to manage these devices are likely to have less leisure time and spend more time working. The overtime working is in order to keep pace with the machines’ operations. Thus, less leisure, more working hours and fewer earnings as stated by Banerjee.
