Public safety in the context of criminal justice refers the welfare and protection of the general public from crime or danger that affects their safety. According to an article from Daily News titled: Real Leadership Wanted from Police Unions and Mayor Bill de Blasio to Ensure the City Doesn't Slide Backwards on Crime, the ailing relationship between the new york police department and the mayor is endangering the public safety of the citizens. There has been a sharp decline in the number of arrests that have been done for virtually all crime not because they have reduced but somehow the police officers have abandoned their duties. Clearly public safety is a collective responsibility of both the federal and local government.
If offenders are locked in, do we perceive a safe society? Offender treatment is a cautious and encouraging exercise that applies specialized strategies to stop criminal behavior, to be accountable and take responsibilities of wrong done. The focus of this treatment is to help the offender create a better life by developing their strengths or talent and at the same time manage the risk of recidivism. Various offender treatment approaches have been developed such as the behavioral/ cognitive approach, psycho-educational approach, family-work approach and anger management. it is also important to note that different approaches will be used to different types of offender. Offender treatment requires that as soon as they serve their sentence, they have been provided with adequate social and psychological support so that when they are released they can be integrated into the community as law-abiding citizens.it is only possible to manage public safety by ensuring factors that lead the person to criminal behavior are identified and addressed.
