“The 5 Levels of Leadership, Proven Steps to Maximize Your Potential” by John C. Maxwell, published in 2013, gives novel views of the leadership development that could help other people in completion of their goals. These views, which are presented in a simple and easy-to-read way, can help people in contributing to the benefits of their organization, department, or project. It can be considered that the book is helpful in defining Napolean’s role of leader. Maxwell is a confident writer and it is clearly shown by this writing of his book. Most of the important moral-giving stories have been presented in the last sections of the book.
According to the book, The 5 Levels of Leadership are as follows:
Level 1. At this level, emphasis has been placed on “Position”, i.e. positional leadership, showing that people start following others because they have to follow. Leader at this level leads by title or uses his position to impose goals on others. He can be considered as a dictator in organization at this level. These leaders have no meaningful relationship with others such as fellow co-workers and other personnel. They force members of their team to get things done at any cost. They try to achieve their objectives by using the motivations of fear for their team members such as demotion of their position or loss of jobs.
Level 2. At this level, emphasis has been placed on “Permission” showing that people start following others because they want to follow. This level of leadership shows the start of the development of relationship, and leaders in this level lead by permission. There is a shift from “me” to “we” and leaders help others in order to accomplish their common goals. Leaders at this level can help in increasing the morale of the team members as well as their energy level. People like to work with such leaders as they enjoy their company.
Level 3. At this level, emphasis has been placed on “Production” showing that people start following others because of their sincerity and work for the organization. After building the relationships in level 2, leaders at this level start taking advantages of those relationships, and start concentrating on production and outcomes. They help the team members in understanding their goals and achieving them. They may start working on separate members and assign goals to each member separately according to his or her habits as well as skills. These separate goals of each member are merged together for a true cohesive goal.
Level 4. At this level, emphasis has been placed on “People Development” showing that people start following others because of what they have done for those people individually. Leaders at this level help their team members to grow beyond the common results of the team or organization, so that they can eventually contribute a lot towards the development of the team or organization. Although, every person has the ability to become a leader, it is difficult for many to reach the level 4 or 5.
Level 5. At this level, emphasis has been placed on “Pinnacle” showing that people start following others because of who they are and what they represent. Leaders at this level consistently help others in becoming level 4 leaders. These leaders try to create successors for their positions. Level 5 leaders influence others by their reputation, know when to be a leader or a listener, create a feeling of legacy in others, and develop other leaders.
“The 5 Levels of Leadership, Proven Steps to Maximize Your Potential” can help in opening eyes about relationship with others. Although, critically speaking, this book deals with many stories of leadership that are slightly difficult to impossible for many leaders, but still this book helps in becoming more than a boss by telling different aspects of inspiration and motivation. Life as a leader goes up and down constantly, and this inspiration is helpful in not only building a good team but also helps in creating future leaders. After reading the book, anyone can find that if no one is following the person, than he is not leading people, he is only taking them to a walk.
