Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a directive and client-oriented style of conversation that is directed to bring about some changes in the behavior through the identification and resolution of ambivalence in the expectations, attitudes, and relations of the client. In comparison to the nondirective interviewing, Motivational Interviewing is more effective and focused on the concrete purpose. MI helps people to understand what their role is in the whole society. Finding and resolution of the ambivalent feelings, attitudes and relations are the major purpose and a consultant is deliberately directive in achieving this goal.
Motivational Interviewing is oriented on the following types of people: those who are not ready to think about the changes in their behavior, those who have the doubts about the changes about the way of their living, and those who are in the process of making the decision about changing their behavior.
It may be said that probation officers should be taught of the main MI principles as it would significantly enhance the effectiveness of them. In this way, the officers would be supplied with the information of how to influence on the offenders so that to make their influence as low as possible. Thus, by providing necessary information for advancing the change in behavior, one may make an offender think of what advantage he/she may bring to the world and how he/she can change his/her own way of life.
Motivation is an aspiration to activity. It is considered to be readiness and sureness in success. Motivation is a key to changes. So, people, in particular offenders described in the articles may serve as an example of what people should do to improve the whole level of the society and understand what their role is in it.
