Good Essay About Tourism: Review

Tourism has grown over the past few decades, improving the lives of a country and its citizens. One major attribution to the change is globalization and exchange of culture. The report by UNEP looks into both positive and negative effects of tourism and what the future holds for countries that solemnly depend on it for its daily practices. The Rice to Riches documentary shows the change from agriculture to tourism in Indonesia. As stated earlier, not all changes are positive towards the people and country. There are environmental concerns registered by Vicki Arroyo in her talk. These three sources will provide an overview of the good and bad about tourism.
In the UNEP report, countries like Tanzania and Indonesia continue to rip good fruits from their tourist attraction sites. Being the tallest mountain in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro attracts hikers from across the continent, bringing positive effects towards the country’s economy. The revenue increased from $150,000 in 1990 to more than $725,000 annually in 2007 (Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, 2009). Apart from the economy, the locals benefit from new job opportunities and business investments such as restaurants and hotels. In the documentary, Indonesia recorded a significant rural to urban migration as young people sought to venture into tourism. In return, most of the tourists make return flights back to the country to enjoy its magnificent coastlines (Davies & Productions, 2011).
However, despite the increase in tourism, the current influx of tourist cannot cater for the cropping developments and job opportunities by the local. Some have to undertake other jobs to assist in paying their bills (Davies & Productions, 2011). Another negative effect is the season nature of tourism. It is not an all year season making it a non-dependable economy for a country. The rural-urban migration took a toll on the farming culture of Indonesia. Vicki Arroyo shares similar sentiments by focusing on the climatic changes that come as a result of deforestation of fertile land and lack of proper workforce in the fields (McManus, 2012). In conclusion, tourism acts as a major boost to the country, but the lack of regulation and few opportunities diminishes its all year existence and dependence. Assigning value to biodiversity might help in promoting better economic potential to the current young workforce in times of low season in tourism.
