Frankly, I’m sort of surprised that Dr. Franklin is interested in volunteering on our board. Her work at bringing in the grants for her company (BIOassurance) is quite impressive, as is her status as one of the ten most influential women in the city. However, there are several things that make her a questionable candidate for an executive board.
First, Dr. Franklin has an awkward manner in her conversations. She wants to keep her iPad out for notes, but she appears to be checking it more for notifications than for using it to write down information about responsibilities on the board (Franklin).
Second, she has an odd sense of boundaries that might not go over particularly well with major donors. She wants the interview to stay away from questions that are too personal, but just about every answer not only verges on the personal but does so in a way that could certainly be off-putting in a conversation with donors. Her primary weakness has to do with being a mother and providing her daughter with attention and care. Then she turns around and asks the interviewer not only if she has children but if she has a similar problem with not being able to give her own children appropriate attention levels. This question is awkwardly personal; the fact that Dr. Franklin asks it so abruptly is a sign that she may not be ideal for the position because she simply lacks social boundaries.
Finally, Dr. Franklin makes it fairly clear that she would not enjoy the events that board members are expected to attend – the sort of cocktail parties that she wants to stay away from so that she can focus on her laboratory work. It’s hard to see her working well as an executive board member, despite her experience in the city.
