Complete Name of Professor
The only daytime drama that I watch is The Young and the Restless. The only indigenous character that I know is Gwen, which is described as Afro-American woman. I would say that there is no resemblance of pure ethnic background in the way Gwen plays her role in the drama or if she ever is described as African in ethnicity or practice. Culturally, Gwen has already adopted the American culture that is free and modern. Gwen is often described by a combination of being professional and being a party girl at night (Bowe n.p). However, I was also captivated by the cast who played Gwen’s role. It was initially played by Nadine Nicole who is German-Filipino descent. And then, the role was taken by Hilary Curtis, who is an African American woman. In other words, the show does not really imply any indication of cultural or ethnic resemblance as anyone of any ethnic or indigenous background could actually take the role, whether she is a Chinese, a German, Filipino, or an African American. Furthermore, I think the reason why the producers of the show do not want to emphasize ethnicity or showing an indigenous character is that they want to neutralize the popular issue of culture and descent. This is one way of embracing a wider scope of audience that goes beyond racial subordination and the categorization of people based on race, gender, and ethnical origin. Also, I think that the reason why some dramas do not include indigenous characters in their cast is to avoid comparison of socio-economic and socio-cultural implications of dominant races over indigenous peoples – who are often looked down.
